Ranocchia is mentally weak and lacks the quality to play for this outfit. We need to stop taking the easy way out by simply looking at other Serie A teams for options and solutions. I am sure there is a quality defender somewhere out there, other than Ranocchia, who is cheaper and with a lot more potential.

Ranocchia has been a trainwreck for a while, definitely can't fill in for Barzagli right now.

I am no expert, but neither are you. In any case, we already have Caceres and Ogbonna. The CB position is the least of our concerns at present. We should be focusing on and allocating funds to strengthening other parts of the team.

Big Italian teams allways are build from the back. Our by far best defender is 33 and starting to struggle with injuries.

Ogbonna and Caceres are very far from good enough to start when compared to Barzagli. We need in these dire times for good defensive players (if they still exist), make sure we keep having the best defence around. As it has allways made a diffrence for us. Replacing Barzagli, is a much bigger deal then some fucking wingers, Pirlo, or forward subs.

If we played a more pressing and attacking came, there would be bigger holes between defence and midfield, wich means the defenders would spend alot more time anticipating the opponent, and taking them on if they come trough on the counter. Wich is far more difficult then just defending in an organised formation.

Bonucci+chiellini alone is a good defence, but not good enough for juventus. Barzagli is the only world class defender we got, and he makes bonucci and chiellini look good.

There are very few world class CBs anymore and very few big teams need or rely on great CBs. They play defence as a team unit. Boateng and Dante are nowhere near world class when asked to defend 1 on 1 but their team protects them adequately.

Same for Ramos/Pepe and Pique/Mascherano. FFS, Bayern and Barca play DMs at CB half the time (Javi M. and Mascherano).

The higher up the pitch you are trying to win the ball back, the less reliance you have on your CBs.

Spot on. Unless we're prepared to spend 100m on thiago silva, we're not going to get a man for man elite defence. Nowadays it's all about the collective unit defending together.

Sadly, CBs today just aren't up to task.

Zach does make some valid points, as does @MikeM (as always ) but I don't see the need for Ranocchia. Caceres needs consistent game time to gain confidence and be solid, whereas Ogbonna was brought in to gradually be a linchpin of the defense. Ranocchia never has and still doesn't convince me; only time will tell whether he will be the real deal, but I highly doubt it.

I'm far from convinced with Rano myself but as with any player if Conte sees something in them, i'll happily give them a chance. Providing the price isn't absurd.

Ranocchia doesnt convince you, because his coaches are playing him the wrong way, and he's held back by some injuries.
Caceres is a good defender, but he has his limitations wich are clear. He isnt the class player that will build an impenetrable wall.
Ogbonna has all the physical abilities, and indeed is a good player to have, but he doesnt have the mental ability that a starter of juve requires.

Look now since barzagli is gone. Before, teams never got trough the center. Now, we'll see players beeing played trough the defence once or twice per game.

The explenation why european teams dont do this, is flawed. Its because there arent great defenders anymore. The teams that have the cash and the brains, actually build very good central defences.

Bayern, has a very good central defence. And they know how to make Boateng look good. PSG arguably has the best central defence in the world.
