People really seem to forget where we were and have not fully digested the amount of progress we've made. It's staggering and perhaps could be argued to have been the most progress any European team has made in the past 3 years.

We've gone from 7th place in Serie A with no real quality players to... bringing in an entire new squad, winning back to back scudetti, reaching CL QF, building our own fucking stadium, building the Continassa which is the equivalent of something Madrid or Barca have and something far ahead of its time in Italy and paying for it with CASH! We have such little debt. Our revenue is increasing yearly at significant rates, our appeal has nearly been restored after playing in the second division barely 5 years ago.

We just got done buying world class players like Barzagli, Pirlo, Llorente, Pogba, Vidal for fucking peanuts and we're so far ahead of Serie A that we are taking the last month of play off. We supply half of the god damn Italian national team who just finished as finalists at the Euro.

In January people were begging to sign Llorente quickly for 20M, some saying to just pay the clause. We ended up getting him for $0M. I can't believe there are people still in this thread posting any negativity at all. Even the "shit" Italian players this guy buys turn out to be decent squad players.

But then again, people on this forum are surprised and down right offended when an Italian team with an Italian core buys more Italian players from the league they play in. In fact, our biggest blunders have been from non-Italian players like Diego, Melo, Amauri, Krasic, Elia, Martinez. Hello?

FFS, people are still complaining about 28M combined for Matri and Quagliarella when we had no appeal, no CL, no money, nothing. And all those players did was contribute to the league's best offence and score something like 60 goals in the last 3 years and average over 0.5 goals per start each. Alright, they're not Ronaldo and Messi but it's not like we withdrew 28M from the bank and dumped it into the ocean. Get a grip. We paid money and got what was required at the time.

Marotta has to satisfy Conte's (who he hired) hunger for top players but at the same time work with modest finances and at the same time save money to fund our other projects like Continassa and our brand new stadium, which will truly take us to another level, and fund it in cash mostly. And so far it's working!

Please look at where we were relative to the rest of Italy 3 years ago and then look at us now. It's unrecognizable. We are better in every single aspect. You can't name something that we're worse off in.
Good post. Like I said last year - remember Dortmunds first season in the CL.

Edit: Ffs, @baggio - the +rep wasn't meant for you

Agreed, its kinda sad he never won a major title. He has allways been doing well at teams, especially when in crisis. And how good is this man defensively.

Milan should hire him, if they were smart. But they are not.

Mikey, is this about the club in general, growing thanks to the new triade or are you talking about Marrotta's work thats gotten us here specifically?

Yea, in fact I'd go as far as saying he's one of the best coaches to have not won a title. He did a really good job with us too IMO. Was unfairly sacked, although I never saw him winning us a title if he remained.

the go-to guy if you don't intend on winning anything :p
Yea like I said. He had a specialized skill set. He could save a team from relegation, or help the, qualify for the CL or Europa. He'd build a solid base for them to go higher kinda. It's his niche.

Mid season?! Ranieri was sacked two games from seasons end.

And on the topic of mid season sacking and ranieri. Ranieri's mid season takeover took roma from -14 to an inch from the title. They were virtual champions for a moment on the final day.

I already know the point you'll make and it's fair. But Marotta's role is not inconsequential at all, in fact, it might be the most important when taking into account the next few years, so it would be silly to even begin thinking about disrupting a cog in the "new triad" in the first place IMO.

Regardless of how much credit you think he deserves, surely it would be wise to allow him to continue what he's doing based on the immense progress we've achieved with him making decisions or simply being part of the decisions.

Yeah Ranieiri is/was is a safe bet and a good caretaker, his time at Intrr has damaged his reputation as a caretaker as he failed there.

But he manages to always fall out of favour with his squad

The reason i ask, is because if it's specific to Marrotta there are things I both, agree and disagree with. I would say his role is being exaggerated. He has given us a solid base but after some trial and error.

We must remember that hes the same guy who spent a lot of our money needlessly, and one of those 7th place finishes were under his reign. Not to debate individual transfers but he has signed close to 30 players in his time at the club, not the best way for a big club to operate IMO, although he has grown into the role with time - prirotizing transfers as per the clubs specific needs. When we talk about moves like Barzagli and Pirlo, I don't think anybody including Beppe himself would think it would turn out the way it did with them. The former in fact came here as a replacement for Legro. The stadium has been a huge influence in adding stability and Marrotta had nothing to do with those plans. And finally, he didn't hire Conte, Agnelli did. In large part, I think even Agnelli's decision to hire Conte at the time was a bad move given the patch we were coming through. Especially with Ferrara having failed as a young coach hired to inject new ideas. Its great that it all worked out the way it did, but I would still like to think Conte has been the biggest catalyst if we pin down what we've achieved over the last two years.

If your point is about him continuing, I don't think i disagree, because for whatever happened in the past, we are now at a stage where we could really up the ante, and if things between the board are smooth, then that's great. As vital a cog as he maybe, there is no doubt in my mind though that he needs to deliver a quality player upfront this summer, no matter what.
