Juve truth on JoJo, Cavani & Verratti

Juventus director general Giuseppe Marotta has revealed the transfer truths behind the club’s failure to sign Stevan Jovetic, Edinson Cavani and Marco Verratti in the summer.

The Italian giants were linked with all three players, but the first two stayed at their respective clubs and Verratti left Pescara for Paris Saint-Germain.

“We spoke to Fiorentina President Mario Cognigni and sporting director Daniele Prade about Jovetic,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “Nevertheless, the player is no longer of any interest to us.

“As for Cavani, we didn’t chase him in the summer because we already knew that Napoli wouldn’t have sold him to us.

“Verratti? Juventus signed Paul Pogba on a free transfer and we are enhancing Luca Marrone, two excellent talents who we believe in a lot.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t spend €12m on Verratti. It’s the same old story of financial restraints.”

The Old Lady did hope to net a big name striker ahead of 2012-13, but they had to make do with a deadline day loan deal for Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner.

“It’s hard to reinforce this side,” the official added. “We’ll have a look around, but a so-called top player will cost you €40m in terms of a fee and then another €10m net in wages.

“Those figures can’t be supported by our game right now. The big Spanish and English clubs earn double what we do. As a result, we’ll just look for wise opportunities.

“This is the most difficult phase as the squad is competitive and it is not easy to make it better,” he continued.

“We are only at 60 per cent of our project. Last season paid us back for the investments that we made, but the Juve world can’t stop. We need to grow. And by some way.”

Marotta was also asked for an opinion on boss Antonio Conte and Napoli’s Walter Mazzarri, two tacticians he has worked with, ahead of the Week 8 top of the table clash.

“Conte and Mazzarri are two Coaches who influence how their sides play. But, with all due respect, our Coach has already won. And he’s younger. Let’s say he is already ahead.”

Conte, however, won’t be on the touchline when Serie A resumes as his ban will not expire until December 8.

“It has been a heavy absence,” Marotta continued. “At times it just needs a gesture from Antonio to resolve a game situation. But everyone has done well during this time.”

I'm very happy marotta has made it clear what the current situation at juventus is considering incomming transfers, and the reason behind it.

Sadly, people will now ignore this interview and complain about if you trow the fee and wages togheter of 6 players, we could have signed 1 top striker.

If he gets injured, they'll blame marotta for not having dept.

Honestly, both him and Agnelli talk too much. While I don't disagree at all, that Italian football doesn't have the economic staying power to conduct surveys for players in the region of the 30-40m category, Im pretty sure we are not going to win a CL title till we ironically splash that kind of money on a game changing player. There are no two ways about it. Every player worth his salt, the one that can influence a game, comes with a price. If Agnelli assumes that Juve should be challenging for the CL, then he needs to be taking note of what this team is so evidently missing.

The depth argument is also interesting. While a lot of us have been gung ho about how Beppe has built a squad which can straddle three competitions, we don't really know how much strength in depth this team has just yet. So far, our depth hasn't proven anything, since we've needed our regular starters to come in and close games out which is not going to work for the course of the season when they begin to tire. Still early days so let's wait and see.

To me, we can beat around the bush for however long we like, but Marrotta failed to procure a striker because of his incompetency to deal with players in that range. The excuse maybe the financial aspect, but that's not the only reason we failed on more than one occasion to get who we were after.

It might not be the ONLY reason, but the financial aspect is the main reason we couldn't get a top striker. Marotta was given a budget to work with, and he had to stay within that budget. Heck, even Llorente cost 36m. We don't have that kind of cash to spend just to take a big risk. If you have shitloads of cash, you can buy whoever you want, and even if that player fails, then it's no big deal, because you have enough cash to cover the losses, and we don't have that luxury at the moment.

Marrotta said it himself, that he regrets not closing RVP, and the reason given for that was that the club didn't want to pay 30m for a player in the last year of his contract. That was the reason why the deal didn't close. Llorente may have coated 36m in his buyout clause, but a guy like Dzeko wouldve come for less. Much less. If only we kept the trail going. Unfortunately, once we sniffed out the Llorente situation, that was the wise opportunity Marrotta is talking about. There was no excuse to end up with Bendtner who was not a top player but a standby. That situation could and should have been avoided, but Marrotta's inabilities had a lot to do with our last minute tussles with clubs like the mighty Siena.

And people can say what they want about our depth, competency, level of quality, but this year, we'll see where the club and Marrotta really stand. A lot of it according to me, hinges on the fact that he failed on his primary task.

dzeko has a 10m a season wage
so how on earth can juve pay that. even if he wants to cut down, i don't believe he wants to cut down 40% of his wages

@JJ about Developing top players: That's definitely one way to do it but the wise clubs know how to do both. Also, we shouldnt go about instilling hope in fans and taking them doen the garden path saying that we want to win the CL if Marrotta acknowledges what he does. This team as it is right now will not win the cl, so he's wrong to say there's very little he can add to better the team. I think last year's undefeated run has created too much of a pedestal for too many people at the club. A season like this can easily expose that.
