I guess I`ll go with 6/10 for our mercato. And I`ll start with the flaws:
1. Marotta made a mistake with his comments when window opened with the "3 champions" quote, obviously he promised something to the fans that he and the club owners couldnt provide. This happened again with "Aguero, Benzema and Ribery" quote for the type of player we were aiming to sign. He shouldnt do it, we are not dumb, blind and clueless to understand that right now we cant compete with the rest big clubs in Europe (rest, as we are still a big club, even in a delicate and bad period!), and most important we cant offer what they can, hell, we can offer only 38 games in Serie A and a couple more in Coppa Italia. Save that comments for the time when we are back in CL Beppe, a minus point for disappointing the fans.
2. Although most of the players that arrived I rate high, there are still questions about a couple of them. For example, a problematic position as a LB with 6 months injured Ashton Kutcher being labeled as a starter, Marotta managed to acquire only freebie Ziegler, who just got relegated. He may be a decent player, but we had a hole at the LB that needed to be seriously filled, as he did very very good with Licht on the right, kudos for that btw! Not good enough, the same can be said for our CB situation, Bonucci was not rock solid, we read the whole summer how Beppe wants to add another CB to the team, quite right suggestion from Marotta, but in the end he failed to do so. Right, cause "Leo didnt want to go to Russia", well if you hadnt waited till the last day, maybe you wouldve found another way or another player. We needed to add some quality in our defense and I am not sure if what he did is enough. We had to invest heavily in that area, we gave almost all of our transfer funds for different type of players, that was a mistake for me, strengthening our defense shouldve been a top priority... There`s always January though, if its not too late..
3. Its not an easy job, but its a flaw - Marotta couldnt get rid of all the useless players we have. I know, I know, it is really hard to sell something that nobody wants, he made the impossible to find a buyer for almost every player in our transfer list, but they all refused - (Amauri, Iaquinta, Pepe, Bonucci, Grosso, Motta, etc...). I dont know who is more responsible for their presence in the team after another mercato, and I dont care, I just want them out and it didnt happen.
4. So far -3 pts, and the 4th negative point for Beppe goes for his method for negotiating. He represents Juventus and Juve`s interests, he needs to be more aggressive when dealing with other teams, players and managers, that thing he said, that "Juve will buy players only at our terms" or something, well thats nice, we shouldnt overpay for any players. and I mean any, but hey, if you really really want a player and you consider him to be exactly what you need, what your coach need, then dont give up that easily, dont walk away from the negotiating table that fast and go for the number 2,-3-4 target. Man up god damn it, you should be more confident in your abilities and actions...
Now, positive stuff:
We covered almost every position and filled almost every holes that we had, missing to fill what I said above - left back and center back. Licht is a solid move with a perfect price, midfield and attack, I`m satisfied, Pazienza, Estigarribia, Giaccherini are clearly back-ups, we got for 0 + 0,5 + 3 = 3,5 mil, nothing much to say about that, wish them luck. Pirlo is an awesome player, he can make a difference and yes, even with his 32 years of age, well done here. Vidal is one of my favorite players, I like his style and play since, I dont know, 2-3 years maybe, I was happy we signed him, he is a beast, and Vucinic has some magic, he can score goals, create for his teammates, and Elia has potential, remains to be seen if he`ll be a revelation or a disappointment this season. Another important stuff - we got all these players in a reasonable price, we did not overpaid like last year, Licht for 9,8 is a steal, Vidal for 10,5 is a steal, Elia for 10 is fair price and Vucinic for 15 is quite right. Now its up to Conte to do his job, fingers crossed for him to make this Juve win again. On paper, we are better team than last year, so I expect an improvement. Which is our place on the table? Cant say, we had a shot to compete with both Milan and Inter if we managed to improve drastically our defense, we didnt and for now I say we should compete with the likes of Roma and Napoli for the 3rd spot, wont be easy though, so wish Conte good luck!!
