Our January signings were pretty good actually - Matri, Barzagli, Toni. Vital goalscorer plus decent backups needed to replace those sold/injured. It was the main summer mercato which was less than impressive in hindsight.

He did have no preparation time for that mercato but what bothers me is that Marotta must now see that trying that method (trying to create a strong 'team' from many average parts) didn't work, we don't want to end up doing the same thing again this summer. Lichtsteiner, Pirlo and Vidal are all strong moves, we aim to clear out a lot of shit that both he and Secco (mainly) brought in, but we need to bring in a strong DC and LW, being decent-good is not enough.

Getting toni for 3.5m a year is better than getting lucas piazon for 1m a year? Marotta excuse for not buying him was the biggest rofl of that mercato. "We will buy players for the fair price" he is still stuck in 1997.

I don't see how the two are linked. Toni was needed as an emergency striker for the first team and was useful, his wages were knocked down from the astronomical figures he inherited at Bayern and we paid no fee. Piazon is a young kid who we wouldn't match Chelsea's offer for, different issue.

It does not matter if you knocked down his fee from what he was earning at Bayern, knocking down his wages from 50m to 3.5m is still a fail. You did not get piazon because you refused to pay him 1m a year (I may be wrong but that's what i know)
Matri and Toni arrived in the same transfer session if i am not wrong. You did not really need toni after getting matri.

Secco got a lot of expensive players,he went for quality. Marotta so far has not been able to get rid of the secco's garbage (unless you call melo a fail).

It seems like we will be the team that "grinds" out results without any ease whatsoever. If we win, it will be a huge team effort and not on the individual brilliance of any players on this team. Unfortunately for us, when the team falls we can't rely on that kind of superstar to come up clutch for us. We don't have anyone like that.

Secco didn't go for quality, he just paid far too much for a lot of decent-good players. Marotta has also done this with 3-4 players, to a lesser scale. That happens naturally with all transfer directors and managers over time but as long as a player performs it doesn't become an issue. When they fail, it becomes a big issue. Our problem is we can't afford to waste loads of money anymore, Exor had to inject €120m to fund transfers and cover losses caused since 2006.

What's irritating is that one week Agnelli or Marotta will say that we are in the market for champions, yet the next either they or someone above them (Jacky, Exor, shareholders?) refuse to move on big transfers, no leeway at all. These days you cannot compete for champions without more tolerance financially. So you either make the move and put the money down, or you go for lesser players in the right areas.

We tried that last season and it didn't work, because the team wasn't balanced, players out of position and no defensive unit. But I think the additions so far improve the team, three more players and we have half a chance.

Toni and Matri aren't really related, both were needed. Quagliarella's long term injury needed cover, and Amauri's departure as well.
