Gilardino up for Euro 2004
Wednesday 28 April, 2004

Parma youngster Alberto Gilardino has told Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni that he is available for Euro 2004.

"For now I’m just thinking about the Under-21 side," said the striker. "But if Trap wanted me then I would happily scrap my holiday plans."

Gilardino has been talked about as a possible contender to make the squad after a splendid season at the Stadio Tardini.

The former Piacenza baby has scored 18 goals in Serie A this season, with just Milan’s Andriy Shevchenko and Francesco Totti of Roma above him in the charts.

And with Pippo Inzaghi a doubt for the Finals because of fitness problems, Gilardino could get a surprise call.

The Juventus target is certainly in good form as he netted twice in 27 minutes last night during the Azzurrini’s 4-0 win over Sweden.

"I’m happy but there are some important matches still to come this season," added Gilardino.

"I have three League games left with Parma and then there is the Under-21 European Championships. Hopefully I’ll have enough in the tank to make an impact."

Its all up to Trap, i would love to see Vieri dumped! -that lazy primadonna bastard. Of course for others the name Vieri sound more dangerous and good, but in practic Gilardino would do better, i think so. And he could easly fit in in Vieri's role. The only issue that could favourise Vieri is that he is more experienced indeed. If he scores and dont wastes changes like he use to do, then im ok with it.

But there is room for them both, now that Inzaghi might be out.

he desereves a place at azzurri squade...
these are my choices:dp-totti-bobo(fix places)
miccoli(alternative of dp)-cassano(alternative of totti)-gila(alternative of bobo).
The problem with that is Cassano plays in Del Piero's position, and Trap likes Corradi or Delvecchio to back-up Vieri. Furthermore, I'd be surprised if he took six forwards to Portugal, so even if Gilardino were the sixth, I doubt he'll go.

imo trap could drop one of micco or cassano, since both are slightly similar players who play as forwards while gila is much more of a striker.

imagine if bobo, totti,dp,cassano and micco go and vieri gets injured,we wouldn't have a finisher in the team.

Capello calls in Gilardino
Saturday 15 May, 2004

Fabio Capello will become Roma’s longest ever serving Coach next season and admits he wants Alberto Gilardino there with him.

“He is an excellent player,” he said of the Parma hitman. “I’ve been following his progress since his time at Piacenza and I can say he has really matured recently.”

The Under-21 international is hot property on the transfer market this summer after bagging 19 goals, while Parma’s financial problems make a sale likely.

However, Roma have their own fair share of monetary issues and will wave goodbye to Walter Samuel, Emerson, Jonathan Zebina, John Carew and Francisco Lima.

“We will try to make the team competitive. There is a financial problem here and I cannot deny that, but I remain optimistic.”

The biggest loss of all could be Francesco Totti’s move to Real Madrid, but Capello is convinced it is all paper talk.

“I know that clubs around the globe are clamouring to get their hands on him,” continued the 58-year-old Coach. “If Real Madrid are after you, then you are among the best in the world.”

There were reports that it would be Capello’s last campaign in charge of the Capital club and that he was tempted by offers from Inter and Real Madrid.

“I have another year left on my contract and I intend to respect it. I have everything already mapped out.”

If he does stay on next season, Capello will become AS Roma’s longest serving Coach, having taken over in the summer of 1999.

“It is a record I will be very proud of, just as I am proud of the results we have achieved here. Now Roma is admired on the international stage, as I brought a new mentality to the club.”

Who cares what Capello wants? Gila wants to play for us so all we need to do is want to buy him, which I'm pretty confident we do. Roma can suck out, they don't have the money to compete with us in a bidding war anyways. The only real rivals we have to face for Gila's signing is Man United as far as I'm concerned.

I know but it makes it better to know Roma wants him and finally he signs with Juve. ;)

I just hope it's not something like we'll leave you Gilardino if you sell us Emerson or something like that.

"Ok, this is how things are. If you give us Emerson we'll let you have Gila."
    "Fine, sounds good."

The next day: Juve complete Emerson signing
The day after that: Gilardino joins Juve, Sensi furious with Moggi

    :D
