Tacconi attacks "mediocre" Toni
Tuesday 22 November, 2005
Former Juventus and Italy star Stefano Tacconi has launched an astonishing attack on the Azzurri’s goalkeepers, Alberto Gilardino and Luca Toni.

“Gilardino and Toni are two mediocre players who are simply playing well right now,” said the retired shot-stopper. “They are nonetheless poor compared to their predecessors.”

The 48-year-old remains resolutely unimpressed by the scoring exploits of the Milan and Fiorentina hitmen in the lead-up to the 2006 World Cup.

Gilardino was runner-up in the Capocannoniere charts last term with 23 goals, while Toni (pictured) has netted 15 in the opening 12 games of this season.

Tacconi, who retired in 1995 after nine years at Juventus and a final three campaigns with Genoa, was even more scathing when it came to those who replaced him in the Italy goal.

“There is a major crisis of Italian goalkeepers at the moment,” he told Radio CRC. “Gianluigi Buffon with a broken shoulder is still better than anyone else in the country.”

Buffon has been sidelined with a shoulder injury since August and has been replaced in the Azzurri area by Angelo Peruzzi, Morgan De Sanctis, Flavio Roma, Christian Abbiati and Marco Amelia. Not content with insulting his fellow countrymen, Tacconi also launched a broadside at Dida and Julio Cesar.

“If Serie A clubs have started drafting in Brazilian goalkeepers, then we really are in serious trouble. It must mean we’ve done everything wrong from 1990 onwards.”

I guess he needs some kind of hobby when he's not banging Alena (and who could blame him?!). And if spouting off to the press keeps him off his shoulder, I can't offer too many complaints. ;)

It is interesting to see him chumming around with Capello as he has since his injury. Seems like he's definitely become a "made" guy in Capello's own football cosa nostra...

Serie A round-up: Buffon back for Juve

Gigi Buffon will return to Juventus first-team action in Thursday's Coppa Italia tie at Fiorentina. The Italy number one has yet to feature this season after undergoing shoulder surgery, but Juve boss Fabio Capello has confirmed he will replace Christian Abbiati in Florence.

"Buffon will be in goal and he will be joined in the team by those who haven't played that much this season," said Capello.

Buffon - injured in a pre-season friendly against Milan - has been in training for the last three weeks, but the outing against La Viola will be the first real gauge of his recovery.

"This will be Gigi's first real test and we will see how he feels after the game," said Capello, whose side face Fiorentina again in Serie A at the weekend.

"He knows that things are different in a game than to a training session. In the latter, your teammates respect you, while your opponents just want to score past you."

FORZA Supa Gigi... we missed you!
