IMO that has to do with the replacements for the aging squad. Rabiot+ Ramsey+ Arthur combo was a huge step down from the aging Khedira+ Pjanic + Matuidi. .Sandro was never properly replaced as Frabotta a series c player was his replacement. De ligt was also not good enough to replace Bonucci or Chiellini.

No wonder team failed when the replacements for the aging players were all poor quality.
