Well yes if we are making a top 5 you could say Del Piero, Scirea, Buffon, Platini and Boniperti are hard to argue against, because 4/5 have that longevity and success, and the other won the Ballon D'Or 3 times in the jersey.
After that Nedved, Zoff, Zidane, Sivori, Charles, Baggio and a handful of others of an extraordinary level who lack a little less in either success or longevity.

Seems like the internet and social media made the likes of Pirlo and Gigi much more international in appeal than DP, whose career had been through its ups and downs while Juve were not as visible as a brand as they are today. Some of this is perception, the reality is that each of them have been relevant and decisive for the team in their careers. And that's even before you speak of career longevity.

Not sure it's that easy to make the distinction. I'm a massive DP fan, but its a fair point to make, when one says, that Gigi has been at the apex despite his age. Of course, it was harder for DP, being an outfield player, but I think his inability/lack of luck to be the go to guy with the Nazionale, and ups and downs be it through injury, or lack of coach support, as with Capello, Juve's time in the doldrums somewhat restricted his impact on a global scale to a degree, in terms of being an undisputed 'football legend.' You could say he's an undisputed legend for Juve, but you'd put Pirlo before him as a legend of the game, and I'm not sure that's fair to DP because of the fact that his talent was just as sublime.
