Buffon Included in FIFPro's Team of the Year

FIFPro have dished out their annual awards after collating the votes of professional footballers from across the globe.

The Brazil star wins the top Player of the Year award for the second successive season and his team-mate Lionel Messi picked up the ASPIRE Young FIFPro Players' Player prize.

"This is a huge honour and also provides important motivation to keep striving for future progress," Ronaldinho said of the award.

Samuel Eto'o, who is currently sidelined through injury, was handed the FIFPro Merit Award for his work with football in Africa and efforts to drive racism out of the game.

The only non-Barca player to be recognised was Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

The exciting Portuguese prodigy succeeds Old Trafford team-mate Wayne Rooney as the ASPIRE Fans' Young Player of the Year.

A Team of the Year was also revealed:

Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus); Lilian Thuram (Barcelona), Gianluca Zambrotta (Barcelona), Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid), John Terry (Chelsea); Andrea Pirlo (Milan), Zinedine Zidane (Retired), Kaka (Milan); Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona), Thierry Henry (Arsenal), Ronaldinho (Barcelona).

Golden Ball To Buffon?

According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, the Juventus goalkeeper has triumphed in the most prestigious award of the year.

The judges of France Football had to hand in their votes by last night and rumour has it that Gianluigi Buffon has won the award ahead of Real Madrid's Fabio Cannavaro and Arsenal's Thierry Henry.

This would be the second time ever that a goalkeeper won this award, which is handed to the best player in Europe according to the various voting journalists. The previous goalkeeper was the legendary Yashin, with no other goaltender ever having the honour to win after him.

This award would be the perfect cherry on top of the icing for Buffon who won the World Cup in July with some amazing displays and also remained with Juventus despite the Bianconeri being demoted to Serie B.

Last year’s winner was Barcelona’s Ronaldinho, and if the reports are true, the Brazilian star did not even make it into the top three due to his poor World Cup performance.
