Many keepers come and go as the flavour of the season. Gigi is simply the best keeper of all time for the standard he's maitained for a decade. It's not like he is the best keeper in Europe every season, but he's consistently up there in the top 3-4 when not THE best. I think that consistency is truly the mark of a champion. And Gigi is top as far as that goes. Not to mention, being a good guy to go with it.

The only way different era players can be compared is by their impact and their legacy. Don't write off Zoff or Yashin so easily. Buffon is legendary keeper, but no need to disrespect other legendary ones.

He's a goalkeeper who won the Ballon D'Or, in the days when every game had about 10 goals. And the football would probably kill you if it hit you in the face.

He's basically the father of the modern goalkeeper, and it's true that it's impossible to compare across an era, but it's also unfair to Buffon or others to compare to an icon who was around at the time the game was developing. No matter what they do they can't reinvent goalkeeping.
