Buffon Set For Sunday Return?

Claudio Ranieri has hinted that Bianconeri shot stopper Gianluigi Buffon could be back in action as early as Sunday.

The Italy number one has not featured for Juventus since suffering from pains to his lower back three weeks ago and he was left out of Roberto Donadoni’s starting XI to face Portugal on Wednesday.

However the goalkeeper seems to have recovered from his set back and he was in training on Monday morning. Juventus are away to Udinese on Sunday and it would be a huge boost for them to have Buffon back between the sticks.

“Buffon trained this morning and he could be on the pitch on Sunday,” said Ranieri.

“We can’t talk about the Champions League yet as there are still 51 points up for grabs from now until the end of the season.”

“We will know better when there are three or four games left.”

Juventus were extremely poor on the weekend and the Bianconeri drew 1-1 with rock bottom Cagliari at the Olimpico.

Ranieri knows that any further poor displays could severely destroy their hopes of playing Champions League football next season.

Italy fans will be relieved that Buffon is on his way to recovery as there were fears he could miss the Euro 2008 tournament in June.

Buffon & Trezeguet Fit For Udinese

Gialuigi Buffon and David Trezeguet have both been passed fit to start this weekend’s Serie A clash with Udinese.

Goalkeeper Buffon has missed the last two Serie A matches, as well as the Coppa Italia tie with Inter due to a chronic back complaint.

The problem was so bad that there were fears he may end up requiring a hernia operation that would have put his participation at Euro 2008 at risk.

Buffon’s return date has already been put back twice but it seems that he will now definitely return for the match at the Stadio Friuli.

Trezeguet will also participate after recovering from muscular problems that he reported following last Sunday’s disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Cagliari.

The Frenchman is the current top-scorer in Serie A with 15 goals, and will be hoping to add to this tally on Sunday.

Meanwhile Giorgio Chiellini is also said to be recovering well from the knee injury he picked up against Empoli in the Italian Cup last month.

The 23-year-old will not be fit to play against Udinese, but there is a chance of him returning for the following week’s match with Roma.

Buffon Is Our Maradona Says Legrottaglie

Nicola Legrottaglie says that superhuman goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is as important to Juventus as Diego Maradona was for Napoli during the 1980s.

Maradona, regarded by many as the greatest footballer of all time, was the focal point of the great Napoli side who won two Scudetti in 1987 and 1990, and a UEFA Cup in 1989.

Buffon is today undoubtedly the best goalkeeper in the world, and he has been in excellent form again this season for club and country.

"He's worth a good 15 points a season," said Legrottaglie.

"Gigi is our Maradona. What Diego did for Napoli, Buffon has done for Juve.”

Buffon has missed Juventus’ last two league games with a chronic back injury, with Emanuele Belardi filling in.

However Buffon is now set to return to the starting line-up for this weekend’s clash with Udinese at the Stadio Friuli.

"Without taking anything away from Belardi, who is doing well, with our No1 available the music changes,” Legrottaglie continued.

“We defenders feel more relaxed because he brings security, opponents fear facing Gigi."

Buffon did not play in Italy’s 3-1 friendly win over Portugal last night, with Livorno’s Marco Amelia filling in admirably.
