Let me put it that way: In their first 2. Bundesliga season 07/08, coming from Regionalliga (3. league) without selling players they spent 19 millions which is more than other 17 clubs combined.

this is insane. sure money helps, but it takes insane vision, leadership, planning and persistance to go from that to being a top club in the highest division

and they are not spending big money (they did spend "big" when they were in the lower divisions). most of their transfers are young players with potential like Gustavo, Demba Ba, Ibisevic, Sigurdsson or now Firmino, Baumann, Volland or Sule. their president built them a brand new stadium in 2009 but other than that he doesent seem to spend too much of his own money as he wants to make the club self financial. he also supported the club as a young man (and played for them i think but im not sure) before becoming a billionaire...
