I still need to finish Alan Wake 2. Probably my next project. I keep hearing amazing things and I loved the original.
WARNING: Rant incoming.

I loved Alan Wake 1. The gripping narration by Wake, the quirky residents of Bright Falls and the consistent pacing of the story were all positive aspects. I instantly fell in love with it on launch back in 2010.

I'm 6 hours into Alan Wake 2 and despite its graphical enhancements, I think I'm ready to put it down.

Remedy have tried to make the most "meta" game possible. There's so much lore and meta, probably too much I'd say. In the first game, the opening cutscene gave us this quote from Alan and it really set the tone perfectly: "Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there's little fun to be had in explanations; they're antithetical to the poetry of fear. In a horror story the victim keeps asking why, but there can be no explanation and there shouldn't be one. The unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest and is what we'll remember in the end". I really wish the Developers re-read that quote because Alan Wake 2 badly needs an editor. The story, while incredibly complex and thrilling, just goes on and on and on.

Gameplay wise, they have improved some aspects but also taken a step backwards in other core areas. I fucking hate the new combat system. Dodging enemies/shooting is a frustrating experience. The whole detective thing they've introduced is a huge gimmick, you deduce nothing. It's just putting documents in the right place on the board, even for basic things. It adds nothing and only slows down the game with menu after menu.

The constant, cheap jumpscares suck. Flashing a fucking .jpg on the screen with an obnoxiously loud noise isn't scary - it's fucking annoying. It's made even worse when it happens every 15 minutes.

Environments are so big and spread out that you are forced to backtrack often. It's so much of an issue that they implemented a map to help when you get lost. Alan Wake 1 environments had long winding pathways but generally there was only one way forward.

This is not Alan Wake 2. This is Quantum Break 2 meets Control. The story unfolds in the most slowburn, boring way imaginable. Overly-complicated drivel is what 70% of the writing is here. The other 30% is running on a hamster wheel as it's going absolutely nowhere. People say Kojima needs to get an editor. Can someone please tell Sam Lake to stop writing. Less is more. The sheer amount of esoteric, nonsensical dialogue is just grating and exhausting to listen to by the end. And I have a high tolerance for that kind of thing.

The pacing is off. I understand that AW2 is a survival horror (Resident Evil style) whereas AW1 was more of a action/psychological thriller. At times AW2 feels like a walking simulator. It can be boring. Hours and hours of meta and lore and walking and just nothing. Respect my time. In a 90 minute session I want to feel like I have achieved something.

Graphics - has to be up there with the BEST graphics in any video game. It looks incredible on the Series X!

I really want to love this game more. I'm just having a hard time falling in love with it.

you can see a chicken flying for a short period when the shit hits the fan. they still dont rival the regular birds.

nobody asked for this. what would be the result of a poll between jin sakai and this character?

Loved both games.
Although the first life is strange captured my heart more, life is strange 2 was still really, really great.
LIS: Before The Storm is actually my favorite.

If you like those kind of games, I liked Twin Mirror and Tell Me Why, and LIS: True Colors as well.

Edit: Before The Storm is my favorite because Daughter made the soundtrack, and I'm a fan :p

What do you think it would've been if voting between John Marston and some random new "Arthur Morgan" guy? It's ok for a character's story to have an end, sometimes it's preferable rather than being dragged out and diluted.
