So what is it that you're really "praying" to? An old government? A philosophy?
No, I'm not "praying". Its a sign of respect that takes 15 seconds and I have said it probably 5 times in the past 10 years. Don't even try to say its similar to religion because it isn't even close.

@bes
But it's a bit like praying to god. What is god? Noone knows what other people think it is. And yet they're still calling it the same thing, as if it were clear. Same thing here. What does it mean to "respect" your country when it's not defined by the current government or anything concrete? Isn't it just empty words?

but what will you achieve with the change? political correctness? at the cost of what? alienating the masses. listen, there is a world of difference here between this phenomena and indoctrination of children in school. let's focus our effort on preventing the other.

I'm confused. You take one rather mild form of indoctrination and say "ignore it" and then let's prevent other indoctrination. And that is?

But the pledge isn't about showing your loyalty to the government and to its current administration. To me it has always been a sign of respect to our fore fathers and the ideals that America was founded on which have become lost under atrocious government and corrupt political parties.

I hate the politicians but I can still love my country. I don't think anybody should be forced to say it if they don't want to.

Now that I think of it since it got dropped from schools the only time I say it is when I go to baseball games.
So not god then?

But that's not gonna fly, Jasp. You're actually participating in a form of oppression yourself. It's like me saying well, we should kill all Jews because of their treatment of Palestinians and I don't care what people think because it's my ideology.

I dislike religion, too. But if folks want to listen to what the bloody Pope says, I can't stop them in doing that. It's on them.
Perhaps i came across in the wrong way, what i meant by that is that those are my ideals and you can call me what you want, but they remain my ideals.

I agree that religion is stupid and false but I don't have a problem with people who practice it as long as they don't try to push their ideals on me. I would consider myself an Atheist but I find overly anti-religious people can sometimes be just as annoying as the overly religious ones. Even though they don't believe in the same ridiculous stories they can be just as pushy and intolerant. Seriously demanding that "under god" be taken out of the U.S. pledge allegiance was stupid.

I don't care if you hate religion but as long as you remain intolerant of other peoples ideas stop getting on my case about black jokes, because you come across as a much more intolerant person than myself.

And just because you left religion doesn't mean everybody else has the same choice you did.
I believe in the freedom of speech, say what you want but if you are going to say something that i find morally corrupt you can expect me to bring up against you.

So you accept that when America declared itself independent, the founding fathers did it as a secular (non religious) gvt?
This is an interesting question because the founding fathers were Christian so even though we were given religious freedoms the gvt was not completely secular. Its debatable.

Can you explain clearly to me why i am a hypocrite, i am lost.
Ok, aside from the racism discussion I had with you in the past, I have noticed that in a number of your posts in this thread you state something along these lines "These are my ideals and they aren't changing" or "I believe in a world were we aren't being told what to believe". You expect your ideals to be respected but you have no tolerance for anybody's religious ideals and are completely against them believing in it. If everybody should have a choice what to think than shouldn't you respect those who believe differently than you?

And for someone who complains so much about religion being shoved on you, you have no problem shoving your anti religious ideals on others. Your acting like the Baptist who criticizes Muslims for being fundamentalists.

Being intolerant of something like religion regardless of whether you view it as intolerant makes you intolerant so get down off your high horse
