It's not really hinted in the books, just a theory.

Oooh don't hurry with that book, you're gonna miss it when you finish as the last two are too long and boring. Those two books should have been one and it still would have been boring.

Could be. But it's difficult to tell, not much has really been said as to his mother. I do think the whole Fire and Ice thing deal with the two families thwarting the others.
