Actually the more ridiculous break in America is at Newport, where 15-20 footers slam down in waters not even 3 feet deep. When the surf is big there, it becomes dangerous. More people have been hurt there than mavericks, but less people try the latter.

The rock formations around the side amp up the waves, and when there is big swell, you have 15 footers breaking on the base of the beach where you'd usually find the half-footers. The break is notoriously shallow. That's why you see more bodyboarders there than surfers... because that shit is only about 3 feet deep.

I bodyboard every time I'm at the beach. It's pretty cool actually, although I can't do many tricks. It's a summer time hobby of a mine and a dream to hit up some 5 meters with clean breaks.
