Damn I wrote a lengthy post and I got logged out

    Anyway, the headline:

    Check out this:
    http://www.soccerbase.com/teams2.sd?teamid=1040

    Lilian Thuram (102 caps)
    Zinedine Zidane (92 caps)
    Patrick Vieira (80 caps)
    Thierry Henry (69 caps)
    Sylvain Wiltord (69 caps)
    Fabien Barthez (69 caps)

The top two players there are responsible for France right now. Those 'dinosaurs' insist on that 6 starting. Experience can only count for so much when the team has performed so badly. Once Gallas and Makelele are added we see there is little scope left to forge any sort of team.

If Zidane had it his way Dugarry would take one spot in the 23-man squad just to keep him happy. :D

im dissapointed to see no Guily and picking Boumsong is just crazy, he has had a terrible season. Mexes has really played well in the last 6months and should have been called.

i really hope they can do well in the tournement

I don't think that's entirely fair. Henry and Vieira are dead cert choices anyway. It would be a brave manager who would drop Vieira, and a fool who'd drop Henry. Someone's already written here that Wiltord's had an excellent season, and Barthez is at least arguably the best of a bad lot in goal.

    ..

France will qualify from the group stage, because their group is really easy, but they will crash and burn when they meet other big guns.

The selection is weirder than ever, I'm able to accept the omission of Pires and Giuly, but no Mexes in the team? Mexes can defend better than Boumsong and an additional asset when it comes to set pieces and such, but too bad.

    "a bad lot"? :confused2

Barthez has had a solid season, he's also the most merited goalkeeper with a World Cup title already around his neck. Coupet holds the reputation of the best goalkeeper in the league the last couple of years (and one of the best in the CL). Landreau is a great talent who has played many strong seasons in the league, but he never got that big club contract, the make or break one. And Frey has been injured most of the season, otherwise I imagine he would be there.

Dacourt slams France boss Wednesday 17 May, 2006

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Olivier Dacourt has blasted France boss Raymond Domenech for omitting teammate Philippe Mexes from his World Cup squad.

Mexes has had a stunning season at Roma to underline exactly why the club signed him from Auxerre two years ago.

But despite returning to his high levels of the past and winning a Les Bleus recall in March, Mexes won’t be off to Germany.

“Domenech didn’t even come to the Stadio Olimpico to watch Philippe and myself play,” the midfielder stated.

“When that is the case then there really is little that can be done.”

Although the former Leeds United man was saddened by his rejection, he felt more disappointed for his younger colleague.

“It is a real shame for Mexes,” added Dacourt. “I am now 32 and I would rather stay at home with my kids than go to a World Cup and sit on the bench.

“Philippe deserved a call-up though, he has had a wonderful campaign and this would have been his first World Cup.

“I’m really, really disappointed for him.”

    Even Dacourt is angry

    Fair enough.

I don't rate Barthez, and what I've seen of Landreau hasn't impressed me. I didn't think Coupet's reputation was so good, but haven't seen much of him. I still don't see them being all that tight at the back if Barthez is their first choice though.

I do think highly of Frey though.

    Nicholas Asulka

Nicolas Anelka has slammed his omission from France's World Cup squad, claiming he has been unfairly treated.

The Fenerbahce striker had hoped to get the nod to travel to Germany after playing in some of France's warm-up games, but was ultimately snubbed by coach Raymond Domenech.

Anelka has tasted bitter disappointment before in missing major international tournaments and again, this time, he feels other factors than ability have played their part in Domenech's thinking.

The former Arsenal and Manchester City front-man, never shy to voice his grievances, has delivered a typically withered riposte in the direction of his coach by declaring he will not be watching the World Cup.

''I won't watch the World Cup,'' he told Le Journal du Dimanche. ''I have not been judged on my sporting qualities.

''I feel Domenech called back hoping for a poor performance (against Costa Rica).

''Unfortunately for him, I scored. It looks as though from the start he decided against calling me for the World Cup.

''I think I deserved a place in the team. Why did he call me back to reach that decision?

''As usual, I have not been judged on my sporting qualities.''

World Cup round-up: Coupet the troublemaker

    Eurosport - Ed Austin 25/05/20

French substitute goalkeeper Grégory Coupet walked out of France's training camp on Wednesday following a rift with coach Raymond Domenech. The French champion came back half an hour later to have a chat with the coach and it seems Coupet has accepted his fate as number two.

France n°2 goalkeeper Grégory Coupet illustrated the tension within the French squad after he left Tignes on Wednesday following an alleged bust-up with coach Raymond Domenech, surrounding n°1 Fabien Barthez's absence from a team hiking session in the Alps.

Although reports claim the Lyon keeper did leave the high altitude training camp with his wife, kids and luggage, he came back half an hour later, to explain himself with Domenech.

This episode occurs after months of speculation regarding who would be number one for the World Cup.

Coupet was a crowd favourite and his record this season spoke for itself, the international securing a fifth consecutive French league title and reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

However Domenech chose stability, confirming Barthez as number one, as the former Manchester United keeper has also had a good season and moreover never failed his country in a major competition.

Coupet should follow Oliver Kahn's example, who took it like a man when national coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced Jens Lehmann would be number one.

The Lyon keeper should know better than to throw a paddy as soon as things don't go his way. Barthez is a world-class goalkeeper and that's why he has been picked as number one. From the moment the coach has made up his mind, Coupet should adhere to the decision and be ready at all times if 'Les Bleus' need him.

is Domenech idiot? how come barthez is the first choice.

the idiot is coupet , he was told that he will be number 2 before Domenech announces the WC list. it is childish to destabilise the whole team from coupet just to make a point about something already agreed.
If he is not happy about being #2 then it is puzzling why he accepted the invitation in first place.
