Lyon's win over Real should raise the profile of the French Ligue a fair bit :)
Oh COME ON! Monaco's drubbing of Deportivo, elimination of Real Madrid and Chelsea, appearance in the CL final? Lyon's thrasing of Bremen, of Bayern? The French League has been kicking ass all over Europe for the past couple of years already :star:

Deschamps quits Monaco
Monday 19 September, 2005
Former Juventus midfielder Didier Deschamps has had his offer to quit as Monaco boss accepted by President Michel Pastor.

Deschamps offered to stand down after a poor start to the season, which have seen Monaco lose four League matches out of seven and suffer elimination from the Champions League.

"Didier Deschamps communicated his resignation to me officially by telephone this morning," said Pastor at a hastily arranged media conference in the principality.

"After that Deschamps spoke to the players, then I saw him at about 11:30am.

"He handed in his resignation and, yes, I accepted it. In my experiences I am used to accepting resignations when they are handed to me."

Pastor came in for some heavy criticism from Deschamps in recent weeks, with the former France captain frustrated by the club’s refusal to provide funds for high-profile summer signings.

"Deschamps did not explain his decision," Pastor continued. "He told me that he wanted to leave, that he couldn’t do it anymore and that, for personal reasons, he didn’t want to stay with AS Monaco."

The 36-year-old was appointed Monaco boss in June 2001. He helped the club win the Coupe de la Ligue in 2003 and reach the Champions League Final in 2004.

After finishing third last season, Monaco have been in dire form this term.

Sunday's 2-0 defeat by Rennes, during which Akis Zikos and Sébastien Squillaci were sent off, leaves them 15th in the standings.

Speculation that Deschamps was set to quit the Stade Louis II has been rife since last Monday, when the former Nantes, Marseille, Juventus, Chelsea and Valencia midfielder criticised the club’s lack of ambition.

"Honestly, I don’t think we have the potential to win the League, even though I do have confidence in my players," Deschamps said. "The truth of the matter is that we are a good French football team, not a great one.

"In 2004, after the Champions League Final, I decided to stay with Monaco with the idea of building a great squad and winning trophies.

"I wanted to keep Ludovic Giuly and Fernando Morientes but unfortunately my wants weren’t fulfilled and I was forced to find back-up solutions."

Deschamps was heavily linked with the Juventus job in 2004, but the Turin giants appointed Fabio Capello instead.

Well keep him jobless till the end of the season, then he can come to us.

This thread hasn't been posted in/updated for awhile, and I haven't been around in about 5 months, so I'll make my first post back an update on the French league.

Surprise, surprise, Lyon is in first place. Have they ever not been in first place over the last few years?

As usual, the French league is still super low scoring. Bordeaux, in 2nd place, have scored only 29 goals in 28 matches. Marseille are in 5th place, and have only scored 27 goals in 29 matches.

Standings after 29 weeks...

1. Lyon - 62 points
2. Bordeaux - 53
3. Lille - 50
4. Auxerre - 47
5. Marseille - 44
6. Lens - 42
7. PSG - 42
8. Le Mans - 42
9. Rennes - 41
10. Nice - 40
11. Saint Etienne - 40
12. Nancy - 39
13. Monaco - 37
14. Nantes - 35
15. Toulouse - 35
16. Sochaux - 33
17. Troyes - 28
18. Strasbourg - 23
19. Metz - 22
20. Ajaccio - 21

Lyon, Bordeaux, Nancy, Monaco, Sochaux and Metz have played one game less.
