Weirdest game, how much did you scream?
Still in second season with Leeds, first season in EPL after promotion last year. I didn't think I'd have that much budget and was aiming for surviving first year. So I was quite satisfied with my transfers and thought my silly season would be done by early June after signing Grealish, Tonali, Galati (young regen for my youth team) and Guidetti as backup striker. All for about 30m while selling off three players for about 10-15m. Then the board came and told my to finish mid-table or leave, even though previews suggested us to end up relegated.
So I splashed even more cash and sold off more players to improve the squad. Sam Byram and Charlie Taylor was brought back since their old Leeds players. Got Krsticic, Nicolas Dominguez, Ortega (CB regen), Munir, Noriega (CB regen), Morilla, Steenvoorden (GK regen), Brouwers (DL regen) and a couple of more promising regens that will arrive in one-two years. Sold off a looooooot of players to finance all this but ended up with a significant surplus and still have 40m to spend but couldn't find anyone that would improve the starting 11.
I thought I had the squad to battle for mid-table. Then I got the schedule... Burnley home, Arsenal away, Chelski, home, Liverpool away, Man Utd away... During pre-season I had continued to play with my original tactic but added two alternative approaches, one extremely defensive and one more proactive. So far I had played 4231 with a lot of possession, I usually at least 60%. Tried my usual approach against Burnley, lost by 2-0 and played shite. Was able to draw Arsenal with the super defensive approach (1-1). Lost to Chelsea (0-1). Went up 1-0 against Pool early on and then Ayling decided to kick someone as hard as he could and received a red card, then we lost by 3-1. Against United Kalvin Philips decided he too needed to try and kick someone as hard as he could and he too did not get away with it... lost by 4-1. After that we played Crystal Palace at home and unfortunately drew 1-1.
By then everyone was upset with me and players came one by one to yell at my face. That's when I got sick and tired and went with my more proactive tactic I play with big teams. We played Newcastle away and won by 7-2, against Leicester 3-2, and Brighton 7-1. Everything suddenly just worked and we're working our way up the table. Player by player I really didn't think this would work, I don't have a team that this tactic should work with. I mean, Guidetti is now my starting striker... and even though they are somewhat used to it, we hadn't played any games with it and since it was our first year after promotion I didn't think we could go on the offence. Enjoying the ride now but really surprised at everything.
