The £14.6m fine imposed on Adrian Mutu by the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] has reportedly been suspended.

Reports coming out of Romania this evening are suggesting that the Fiorentina man has won a provisional reprieve after an appeal.

“This is a temporary suspension of the decision taken by the Swiss Federal Court,” Victor Becali, the player’s agent, revealed.

Mutu was dismissed by Chelsea in 2004 after he tested positive for a banned substance while at Stamford Bridge.

The Romanian revived his career with a move to Juventus and then Fiorentina, but he was this year ordered to pay Chelsea compensation by the CAS.

However, now it seems that the whole case will have to be re-examined after his entourage and the player himself announced their intention to fight against the multi-million pound punishment.

Mutu, now 30, has struggled for form this season after admitting that he had been finding it tough to deal with the sentence imposed on him.

OFFICIAL: NAPOLI HIRE MAZZARRI

Napoli have sacked Roberto Donadoni and hired Walter Mazzarri in his place after several days of feverish speculation.

It became clear that Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis wanted a change when he fired director of sport Pierpaolo Marino last week.

Donadoni was given a second chance, but Sunday's defeat to Roma secured his fate.

De Laurentiis is furious at seeing so little bang for his buck as Napoli lie 15th in Serie A despite a summer of lavish spending.

Mazzarri rescinded his contract with Sampdoria last night so he could take up his new job at the San Paolo.

The Tuscan trainer lost his job with the Blucerchiati in the summer, but as often happens with Italian clubs, he was still on the official payroll.

Mazzarri has signed a contract until 2011 worth just over £1m a season. He will be unveiled at the club's training ground in Castelvolturno tomorrow morning.

De Laurentiis was extremely active in making sure that the deal went through.

Yesterday, he met Sampdoria director of sport Beppe Marotta for lunch in order to smooth things over.

“The fans can be calm because I am working for their future,” De Laurentiis said in a statement on the club's website.

“It's been an intense day, full of appointments and interviews. Soon I'll communicate the decisions I have adopted for the good of Napoli.”

Mazzarri isn't the only new face to be announced as De Laurentiis plans to unveil a new chief executive and director of sport.

Gian Paolo Montali and Riccardo Bigon are the favourites for those respective roles although nothing is official just yet.

The Viola aren't victims, if any club is going to be it will be Juve because we picked him up after Chelsea axed him. It's a bunch of bullshit but Chelsea could trying suing Juve next.
