Balotelli: Italy, racism and Mou Tuesday 2 March, 2010
Mario Balotelli bets on a 2010 World Cup place, explains how he deals with racism and what he hates about Jose Mourinho.
The Inter striker was interviewed by comedy show Le Iene and covered a wide range of subjects that have seen him cause controversy this season.
When asked if he would be playing in South Africa this summer, SuperMario replied with a wager.
“I bet you a dinner I’ll go. If I am called for the World Cup, you have to buy me three dinners and I’ll bring you my Italy shirt. If the Azzurri win, I’ll buy you 40 dinners, however many you want!”
Balotelli could not make his international debut at Under-21 level until he turned 18 due to red tape over his adoption. That Ghanaian heritage has caused problems for the teenager with racist chants aimed against him.
“I am Italian. They try to set me apart because of the colour of my skin, but I am Italian and they know it.
“I don’t know the answer to racism, as I am only a small part of this world and I cannot change it. I won’t say it’ll always be this way, as things are already improving.”
There have been suggestions games could be stopped by the referee if there are repeated racist insults.
“If it were up to me, they could insult me from start to finish and I wouldn’t stop. If they do it to another player and he does want to call a halt to the game, then that’s his way of dealing with it. In my view it’s just another way of trying to intimidate opponents.”
Balotelli has frequently been frozen out of the Inter squad for bickering with Coach Mourinho.
“We really like each other a lot, which is why we argue so much! Our last big row was because I had a cut near my eye and so I didn’t go back to defend a set play. Luckily we didn’t concede, otherwise he’d have killed me!”
When asked if there was something he would like to tell Mourinho that he so far hadn’t the courage to express, Balotelli came up with an intriguing thought.
“I really hate his car.”
SuperMario also shook off persistent rumours he supports Milan, as he has twice been spotted in the stands during the Rossoneri’s games.
“I did support Milan as a child, but now I don’t support anyone. I play for Inter and win for Inter. I went to see a great match between Milan and Manchester United, that’s all.”
