Brilliant as a goal scorer and striker is what Red meant. Of course you can't expect from Toni the same brilliance you see from guys like Messi, Ale or Ronaldo.
He was always where he should have been, he knew how to escape from his markers and score almost every match. Great in the air and at the right place on the ground.
Kinda like Pippo Inzaghi, who still doesn't get the deserved respect. But it's really hard to argue that Inzaghi isn't brilliant at what he does and at what's supposed to be his job in the team.
The difference though is that Pippo is doing the same throughout his career, while Toni can only brag with those 3 years in his career.
Him and Pippo are/were good. Brilliant strikers at least to me has different definition or explanation. I know they do their jobs perfectly but we're not in the 90's anymore. Attackers are obliged to return back, help the middle, open space for themselves, assists etc.
Rooney for example, had a brilliant season last season, he didn't score much but he played the perfect striker role that is required in today's football. Wayne Rooney is a player I can't also. Just to point out Red's silly mark concerning that I don't like Luca.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a brilliant season with his Inter's last season yet he didn't score more than half of what Luca scored 2 or 3years.
Another example, Vieri was recognized very well and really appreciated in the 90's and he was scoring goals for fun, he continued doing them in 2000's but he wasn't as appreciated as he was because Football has changed.
