If it was a penalty it would have to have been a red because Aronica was the last man and he was preventing a clear goal scoring chance.
It once was this way, yes. But nowadays referees are advised to go for the yellow card if it's a penalty. The player only needs to be sent off if the foul was committed outside the area AFAIK.

The big question with Cassano is on Ciro's shoulders -- as it's the reason he hasn't been playing for the NT. What you get in genius... do you lose in team chemistry and professionalism?

There was a sudden shock to the system after 27 minutes when the referee flashed a straight red card at Criscito. The Genoa defender, who was born in Naples, was sent off for swearing at the referee after a challenge on Christian Maggio. It seemed fairly harsh, as the phrase is often heard on football fields
