If it was a penalty it would have to have been a red because Aronica was the last man and he was preventing a clear goal scoring chance. But I agree that it should not have been a pk in the first place.

It once was this way, yes. But nowadays referees are advised to go for the yellow card if it's a penalty. The player only needs to be sent off if the foul was committed outside the area AFAIK.
