The Viola have found victories hard to come by away from the Stadio Artemio Franchi this campaign, achieving just 12 points from their 11 matches.
There has been a particularly noticeable difference between the defensive statistics at home and away: Montella’s side has shipped in 18 goals on the road, compared to just nine in Florence. The club’s leading goalscorers have also displayed a lack of potency on their travels, Jovetic and Toni have 16 goals between them in the league but only two away from home.
Here is a summary of the Viola’s matches away from home this season:
Napoli (L) – After a home win in their opening fixture of the season, the Viola slipped to a 2-1 defeat in Naples. Hamsik and Dzemali were on target for the hosts, with Jovetic’s late consolation unable to influence the final outcome.
Parma (D) – Fiorentina were made to pay for a late missed penalty when Valdes’ injury time spot kick cancelled out Roncaglia’s first half strike to deprive the visitors of all three points.
Inter (L) – Milito and Cassano gave Inter a 2-0 lead after 34 minutes, and although Romulo pulled one back for the away side before half time, there was to be no equalising goal.
Chievo (D) – A goal for either side in a frenetic two minutes of the first half tied the game at 1-1. Thereau and Rodriguez had their names on the scoresheet.
Genoa (W) – An early strike from Pasqual proved enough for the Viola to earn their first away victory of the campaign.
Milan (W) – Aquilani and Borja Valero both found the back of the net to establish a 2-0 advantage at the break. Although Pazzini pulled one back for the hosts, El Hamdaoui produced a sublime top corner finish to secure three points in the dying stages.
Torino (D) – During Fiorentina’s previous visit to Turin, they left with a share of the spoils after playing out a 2-2 draw against Torino. Montella’s men were twice behind in the match and on both occasions drew level. El Hamdaoui again grabbed a decisive late goal, this time an equaliser.
Roma (L) – An action-packed first half finished 3-1 to Roma via a double from Totti. Despite hitting back early in the second period through El Hamdaoui, the visitors were eventually put the sword by Osvaldo’s strike in the closing stages.
Palermo (W) – The Viola ended 2012 in style by chalking up a 3-0 away victory against Palermo. Two goals from Jovetic in the second half secured the points. Rodriguez then slotted a penalty home in the 89th minute to put the icing on the cake.
Udinese (L) – The Viola fell victim to Udinese’s veteran frontman Di Natale, who tucked away a penalty on the stroke of half time before netting again in the second half to help guide the hosts to a 3-1 win.
Catania (L) – The visitors took the lead through Migliaccio in the first half. However, Legrottaglie equalised for Catania early in the second half, before Castro stole the points just two minutes from time. This 2-1 loss capped off an unsuccessful start to 2013 for Fiorentina.
Four league games in January yielded just one point for Montella’s men, however last weekend’s 2-0 home victory over Parma will give the Viola some momentum coming to Turin.
