Felipe Melo in many ways personifies a huge problem in Juventus this season. He might have qualities, and I'll return to this later, but he is in no way able to impose them on the game.
Whoever he plays against he is inferior. Mentally, physically and technically. If only Melo made a mistake or two during the game, giving the ball away too easily, he could have redeemed himself by working hard, stepping up his game and showing - on the field - that he wants his new team to win. He talks a lot, like his fellow Brazilians, but never lets his feet speak. The only proofs of enthusiasm I've witnessed have been a couple of awkward "masculine" goal celebrations. He never fights for his team, when he or the team loses to ball, he doesn't track back in order to regain possession. Sissoko does this, Marchisio does this, even Candreva does this.
About the midfielders qualities. Melo is not as able technically as people seem to give him credit for. His ball control is mediocre and when moving with the ball he seems everything but calm and natural. He has shown a capability to pass, however, deciding when and where to pass is definitely not his greatest strength. The Brazilian is slow compared to any other central midfielder in Serie A, even Romas Pizzarro. And again, when choosing to move forward or not, he gets it wrong more often than not. When looking at challenges Melo is supposed to be the big dog for Juventus. He is supposed to be the one to impose fear on the opponents. Instead he is muscled out of games week in and week out.
Felipe Melo certainly has yet to show his worth in Juventus. I was hardly impressed by this big baby when he was in Fiorentina, but I haven't seen him play for the Seleção. Maybe the key for him performing in black and white is to analyze what he does with the national team, as he must do something right there to be picked again and again.
Enlighten me!
