We did a domestic double and went to a CL final with a Khedira-Pjanic midfield. I wonder what’s happened since they left… and were replaced by Arthur and Mckennie… scraping 4th place finishes in the league

They were technically awful (Matuidi) or becoming passengers and past it (The other 2)

But getting rid of players who are the weak link doesn't solve anything if you replace them with fucking even worse "market opportunities" so we downgraded an already weak position

Looks like the new guys figured out in all of 7 seconds that our entire midfield wasn't just bad, it was stopping us from achieving anything and had to be replaced ASAP

Pjanic, Matuidi, Khedira were all finished or very close to finished at the top level. Problem is we replaced them with players that have top levels similar to their washed up levels.

He scores goals and runs a lot but does nothing else you’d want a B2B mid to do. Can’t pass, rarely puts in tackles, constantly out of position defensively. He has potential, but needs a lot of work.

I am pretty positive that we would've won Cardiff with our previous midfield.

There's basically no midfield that isn't a massive downgrade from Pogba - Pirlo - Vidal. That can't be the standard we expect because it's completely unrealistic to have a midfield that is as good as that one.

Absolutely true, there was maybe one or two midfields worldwide that matched that strength (Casemiro/Modric/Kroos comes to mind)
In my opinion we spent too much money on our offense and not enough to get a good midfield. Had those 90m for Higuain, 40m for Bernardeschi or 40m for Kulu gone to get ourselves strong midfielders, i am sure we'd have been better off.
