does the team have to be populated first or can i do it with empty spots?

I think you'll have to pick some players first, for example you can bring in a striker you picked (from your bench) for an empty spot in your mid to change the default 3-5-2 to 3-4-3.. etc

don't know much about their players value mechanism, there are some extremely expensive cack players and some absolute bargains. not balanced in anyway. don't know if its on purpose or just lazy set up.

no i meant earlier i got vidal for around 10 now hes worth 12, i think playewrs are mostly valued based on last years performance

yeah I got you, I discarded my team at first and then registered coupla days later and noticed Tevez went up to 18 something million. sorta they've focused too much on last year performances. there could be a bit more balance in valuing new transfers, last year injured players and regulars. some odd choices here and there.
