I always thought he was a bad purchase. He had few average years at best in Udinese and one in Napoli iirc but we payed too much for his services. No resale value whatsoever.

Just the way I can be objective enough to see that, I can say with complete objectivity that I consider him to be a more complete footballer than Matri. His skill set and he has an extra dimension to his game unlike Matri. There is no bias here when I say this. If Matri sells for 10m and Quag sells for 8m, then that differential has more to do with his age more than his ability. Irrespective, I think Quag has proved to be a reliable back up and delivered almost every chance he has been given. You cannot call him a bad purchase. Completely disagree with that assessment, as I do with the rest of your posts in this thread.

Effectively, they are both up for sale, and all the teams interested in one player are interested in the other too, seeing their availability. Quag seems to have more interest across Europe than Matri coz he scored more goals in the CL and got some visibility, while Matri seems to have Allegri eager to reunite with him. I still feel, it's in both their interests to leave, even though I'd be happy to have them stay.

It is not one year. It is the perception of a 30 year old striker, which adds to the devaluation IMO. You say all those things about his off the ball movement, and selfishness, and yet he has put in 3 MOTM shifts and turned out to be our highest scoring forward in the CL. How can that be argued against?? He is doing his job when called upon.

You're calling Matri a reliable back up and in that same wane completely writing off Quag, who has actually been 4th choice to start with and worked his way up the ranks, to actually finish as Conte's second most proffered attacker by the end of season when he switched to e 3511, even post Gio's injury return. And keep in mind that this is with pretty much playing one game a month for large stretches of the season. Again, even here when you say Matri is reliable, how then can you write off Quag whose numbers and efficacy are ahead of Matri INSPITE of less game time.

When did I write him off? He's a decent backup but as we need Llorente's sub Matri is more suited for this IMO. Quag is more of SS and we are in need of CF with good movement for cover if Llorente gets injured or fatigued. Llorente, Tevez, Vucinic, Gio, Matri looks balanced enough.
Matri was also neglected by Conte and worked his way up. Both of them had good and bad spells last year as their good performances are mostly influenced by decent run of form while for something more you need more talent.

I don't understand how you can say Matri is a better backup for Llorente, it doesn't make sense. I guess by that argument you would also prefer a 17yr old primavera targetman over Quag because he plays the same role. Quagliarella proved to be a far superior player and someone that can handle pressure much better than Matri aka Mr 0 zero football skills outside of finishing.

I agree, though I think Matri is a far more questionable purchase. Think of the money we wasted for a 7th place finish.. Instead of spending 18m on Matri + 15m on Vucinic the next season we could've spent 30m on someone else.
