Real Madrid - Feyenoord 3 - 1
Pauuwe og
R. Carlos
Guti

V. Hooijdonk

Fantastic game from Monaco this time around! Real wins comfortably, R. Carlos scores and assists the first goal of the match. Chosen man of the match.

Best goal is definitely the impeccable freekick from Van Hooijdonk :cool::cool:

Not too many impressing for Feyenoord, Lurling and Kalou were both quite ok, Ono needs target practice. For Real, CAMBIASSO was very good, R. Carlos as well. Zizou was good overall if a bit shaky at times. Makelele missed the boat twice but otherwise a great ball winner. Figo got an assist but otherwise he was kinda boring. Raul had a bad game.

Real wins the cup for the first time in club history, they've lost to Lazio (I think it was) and Galatasaray on two occasions in the past. Great match, attacking play and a tremendous goal from Pierre. Too bad Feyenoord, clearly inferior, didn't have more to offer.

Anyone doubt Real will retain the CL?

And what about the pitch? How could such an entertaining match be played on such a poor surface?

Great match....Real M look in very good shape...and ZZ showed why France came home early from the WC. He was superb.

Poor pitch? It looked quite alright to me.

Yeah he was great at times but he also lost the ball a bit too frequently at times :undecide:

I guess that since the players didn't seem to mind then the surface must have been ok...but I thought it looked patchy and a the grass quite long.

As for ZZ...well I know a lot of members can't forgive him for leaving Juve, but I still think he is the number 1 in the world.
Some of his little flicks and layoffs were a joy to see.

Surely, it's only that I try to see it all in a context and those times they are effective I really welcome them, in the opposite case not as much. But it was their first official game of the season and judging by the form of Raul, they're taking it slow to begin with. Morientes was injured as usual.

Feyenoord lack imagination and don't have the great individuals to take them to the top, I'm sure Erik will find it convenient to disagree... :D

Entirely based on tonight's game, they were no match for Real, keep in mind Real play an attacking game, push forward with 5 men and such. But they were also lucky to score from rather few chances.

But for Juve, yes Feyenoord could be a problem.

WoW, it was a great European night in Monaco .. Madrid showed that they were in a class of their own !! Cambiasso was superb with his sizzling display in his debut with Real .. Carlos scored with a perfect finish ... van Hooijdonk replied with one of his trade-mark free-kicks ... but Guti ended it with a wonderful dive (header) ... Feynoord nether gave up though, and Real needed Casillas to save the day and get the trophy ... Zizou had a decent night too .. but Raul and Figo were disapointing !!

Lesson of the day: Real DON'T need Ronaldo !!

Real Madrid just proved again they are the benchmark, the club, the rest aspire to be and envious of, they can kill you from any angles with Zz the puppet master

Alex i have to disagree there with you, i think Monaco's pitch has always been a disgrace to a club and ciity of billionaires

    Its a terrible pitch

It was almost as pleasant as a night out in the Monte Carlo casino for Real Madrid, who easily defeated Feyenoord on Friday night to claim their first ever European Supercup.

The Champions League holders were too classy for Feyenoord who are still at a loss following John Dahl Tomasson's departure to AC Milan.

In fact Feyenoord lacked edge up front despite Bonaventure Kalou's insistance to score against Real Madrid. Shijni Ono did have a couple of shots flying high and wide, but apart from them, it was Real, Real, Real all night.

It did not take long to understand Real Madrid were head and shoulders above their opponents on the night as chances piled up right from the start.

Classy Zinedine Zidane clinched the first chance with a low shot on 3 minutes, but the Merengues' first goal came from Roberto Carlos' miscued cross by Patrick Paauwe which ended in Zoetebeer's net.

Roberto Carlos later added a superb second goal after a swift combination with Guti. The Pentacampeao's right-footed curved drive ended well out of reach of Zoetebeer to put Real 2-0 up.

Just as the match seemed to fall into lethargy, Pierre Van Hooijdonk scored a magnificient free-kick to restore hope in the Feyenoord camp.

Those hopes were quickly dashed as Guti headed home a pinpoint Luis Figo cross. Real were out of reach with their two-goal lead and never were threatened by a bland Feyenoord team.

Javier Portillo and Inter target Santiago Solari came on the pitch late in the match but neither of them were capable to spice things up in a sedated Louis II stadium.

Dennis, it's the 2nd game I see from Monaco, other one was the Super Cup 2 years ago. And I probably can't tell a terrible pitch from a good one cause I didn't notice anything.

This was to be expected! The game showed the difference between the Dutch top teams and the European top teams perfectly.

Feyenoord earns a mention here though - they had great spirit and didn't just give up!

Real - superb play. What the hell would this team do with Ronaldo?? They don't need him at all!

The pitch stank and I had my questions about the referee at times but none of these things influenced the outcome - Real Madrid was superior but Real Madrid is superior to virtually every team on the face of the earth at this moment.

Feyenoord stand a good chance in the Champions League though - if they never meet Real! :D

    Bravo! Great match!

I noticed that from the very first moment, our hero Hugh Dallas it was, from the infamous Celta-Juve game a few years ago..

The game was nicely played, no Juve-Roma thing here so I thought he was ok not having a lot to do.

    Feyenoord 1 - 3 Real Madrid

Real Madrid lineup: Casillas - Salgado, Hierro, Helguera, Roberto Carlos - Guti, Makélélé, Zidane, Cambiasso - Figo, Raúl.
Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Gyan, Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Rzasa - Emerton, Bosvelt, Ono, Lurling - Kalou, Van Hooijdonk.

Real began the match in ambitious mood, they've not won the trophy in their two previous appearances against Chelsea and Galatasaray, and they looked sharp and hungry as the superstars of Europe went on the hunt for the one trophy they've yet to add to their collection. Tonight's match is their first real test as they prepare for the start of the new Spanish Primera División season but they started as if they'd been playing top teams for weeks. It took only 15 minutes for Roberto Carlos to slide the ball across goal and for an unhappy Patrick Pauuwe to see the ball bounce off his boot, as he tried to block the pass, and disappear behind Edwin Zoetbier. Feyenoord were going to have to show how much they've really grown these last 18 months if they were to make an impression on these European giants. Unfortunately for them Real were ready to put on a display of absolute top-flight world football! Roberto Carlos was both instigator and finisher of a blurringly-fast move which ended with a blinder of a goal in the 21st, his foot connecting with the ball in a show of deadly assurance as it swept into the top right-hand corner. With such an imposing display of football one can only try to imagine what the hell they will be like when Ronaldo is added to the team??!! After losing their way for the next 10 minutes Feyenoord began to show their renowned character again and launched some threatening moves toward the Real end. Anthony Lurling made the most impressive move of the match (and his best since arriving at the Kuip) for the Rotterdammers in the 39th but his shot went just wide while Paul Bosvelt blasted one over in the 42nd as the Dutch team tried to exert pressure. Feyenoord must have been wondering what had hit them as they went into the dressing-room at half-time.
They were clearly over the shock of the opening half as the 2nd act got underway with some much improved passing of the ball and a real semblance of self-confidence. In the 55th they launched another attacking move which Paul Bosvelt almost managed to round off with a ball-in-the net, but it landed on the roof of the goal. Feyenoord got a freekick anyway for an earlier 'offence' which Pierre van Hooijdonk magicked over the wall, as he's done so often, in the 56th. A real beauty! The joy of the Feyenoord fans didn't last long as only four minutes later the Rotterdammers' defence was once more clinically sliced open for Guti to head in at the left-post for the 3-1. Van Marwijk's team were not going to bow their heads, however, and the 3rd goal spurred them on to push forward. Ono fired off a shot in the 64th that went just wide of the mark and P-Air had another chance from another freekick in the 66th but it came from too far out to worry or deceive Casillas. Lurling continued to worry the Real defence in what is undoubtedly his best performance so far while the Rotterdammers refused to lie down and gave their expected-all for the fans who'd travelled to Monaco. Despite the entry of substitute Thomas Buffel, who'd earned the applause of Fenerbahçe fans earlier in the week with his fine goal, and a continuing show of Rotterdam-spirit it proved a bridge-too-far for Feyenoord against the uncontested top team of Europe tonight but they can be proud of their performance and they will have learned much to take with them into the Champions League and the Ere Divisie.

    Thanks to FootballNL
