if you lave your zone open, and you are too late to close down the opposing player anyway, without knowing for certain whether your look/signal was recognized and acted upon, ultimately you are at fault.
Before opening up that zone, Chiellini should have made certain that Giacherini was indeed positioned and expecting to do cover work - again, in a 3-5-2, the winger is a farther from that zone/situation than the Lb would be in a 4-4-2.
Yes, Chiellini stepped up needlessly when he should have kept the shape of the defense as it was. Far too hasty.

Very promising game today.

The 3-5-2 worked wonderful instead of the lame 4-3-1-2.

Spain's structure changed much when they brought on Torres and Navas, they had a reference point upfront and a player that could penetrate directly.

It was Chiellini's fault :agree: When the other 2 CBs went to the right, the last thing he should have done was to join them and leave his side open. He was the CB who played further to the left and that automatically makes him guilty for the open space. Giaccherini is not at fault for the goal, not at all.
Yep, Chiellini shouldn't have stepped up like that. I think Bonucci was poor as well.

Ireland and Croatia are game-raisers against us and we'll be missing a few players come game 3. Don't think we'll make it. Shame Cassano isn't fully fit. He's a real talisman.

I think Balotelli will be important against Ireland and Croatia as they will defend and Italy will need a big, physical striker to occupy their defense and create space for others.

Looks like the 3-5-2 will be Italy's Formation for the tournament. They played brilliantly for 60 minutes. Even then, looked very dangerous when given the chance. Matri would of been a good option for Italy, too bad he isn't at the tournament.

same stands for Spain it's not guaranteed they win out either
I feel they'll be far more dominant in their games, and will play a striker.

Italy typically make hard work of sides like Ireland, Wales, Scotland etc, they'll play a very high tempo and physical game. That one might be decided by the end with tired legs. Croatia will be more of a technical game.

true, but the other two teams are indeed rather underwhelming - Ireland has hardly ever had the quality to be a contender, except maybe back in 2002, iirc, while Croatia is having by far it's worst generation since playing as an independent country.
It's not so much a weak generation as much as injuries and awful form of some players. As a matter of fact, the provisional squad for this euro was the same as the one for 2008+ Eduardo. On top of it our players were young back then and now they're all in their best years. But tonight we won't start with Eduardo, Kranjcar, Olic and except Modric, noone else can really make a difference. Not that Ireland has stars themselves, but even if we make it against them, it's impossible to get more than a point against Italy and Spain.

even with torres they don't look that dominant so to me I think it could go either way, their arrogance could be their demise

After this season and today, I think it's clear. Marchisio has developed into one of the best CM's in Europe. I'll go as far as saying, baring Iniesta and Xavi, there isn't a more complete midfielder in Europe.
