Italy really lack in fire power up front! Cassano is amazing but can't last a full game, Balotelli is extremely unreliable, Di Natali...is meh and Jewbinco is well...Jewbinco. I wonder if Borini will be able to step up and show us something good!

Giaccherini was at fault for the goal, he didn't keep following Fabregas. He played ok otherwise but I'd prefer Balzaretti in his place.
he could have done done better but mainly it was Chiellini's fault - when you play 3-5-2,the left wingback would be a bot too far to properly cover that zone, hence the 3 CBs. In a 4-4-2, with just 2 CBs, the LB would indee have been at fault.

Chiellini looked at Giaccherini and expected him to follow Fabregas since he could then tuck in the center. Chiellini did his job, Giach did not.

Even before the Croatia-Ireland match, I can safely say that Spain and Italy will qualify. They're too superior to their opponents.
I see Ireland beating Croatia to be honest. But yes, all in all, Italy and Spain are superior. Spain in particular will go through with ease. This Italy side surprised me a lot, but much of it, I think, was wanting to show that they had some fight left in them. Might go very differently against Ireland and Croatia.

It was Chiellini's fault :agree: When the other 2 CBs went to the right, the last thing he should have done was to join them and leave his side open. He was the CB who played further to the left and that automatically makes him guilty for the open space. Giaccherini is not at fault for the goal, not at all.

if you lave your zone open, and you are too late to close down the opposing player anyway, without knowing for certain whether your look/signal was recognized and acted upon, ultimately you are at fault.
Before opening up that zone, Chiellini should have made certain that Giacherini was indeed positioned and expecting to do cover work - again, in a 3-5-2, the winger is a farther from that zone/situation than the Lb would be in a 4-4-2.

Matri should have been taken IMO.
I was literally about to post the same thing.

Totally agree, needed some more size up front for later in the game. All those long balls to Giovinco and Christmas is asking too much. Going to be tough with this group of forwards, especially if Balo dogs it like he did today.

Is that what you took from the game? I didn't, Matri isn't quick or skilled like these forwards Prandelli chose. He chose some good players that will move around well and play the ball in every part of the pitch.

Italy gradually became lethargic as the game went on and the speed Spain introduced should have probably won it, but they were poor. It'll be interesting to see what happens when Barzagli comes back because Motta is hard to bench, as is De Rossi.

I've never seen a player get more sympathy from a referee than Iniesta does.
