Nuno Gomes has been Portugal's best player so far, and quite easily too. Not only did he take his goal brilliantly but his hold up play has been fantastic. Every time he's got the ball he's been able to keep up and dish it off quickly. Can't ask for much more from a lone striker.

Thats right. Nuno Gomes is playing pretty nice I must say. However, Ballack is one of very few players who reads the game pretty well. Great player.
very nice pass to hitslperger even though he was offside. Scolari said he's looking forward to working with him.

:rofl2: AND NOW ESPN GUYS SAID PORTUGAL'S WEAK SPOT WAS THE CENTER OF DEFENSE WHILE THEY PRAISE THEIR BEST DEFENDER CARVALHO! :rofl2:

This coverage cannot get any better!

Andy Gray is a cunt.

Fucking Dundonians. :disagree:
A big one.

so he managed to find out he's a striker or is that pushing his acedemic skills?
I think he finally figured out who Nihat plays for. :lol2:

what is wrong with miguel?
Miguel was the one who suddenly got a starting role when Scolari rightfully yanked Ferreira after Game 1 in Euro 04. Problem is that in the middle of Euro 08 qualifiers Miguel turned reckless and stupid for no obvious reason. He started making hacking fouls in qualifiers and ended up on his ass too often -- and to top it off he started getting carded for combative play and arguments with ref. Really, one of those turnarounds in people that make you suspect they started taking drugs.

He got pulled during qualifiers when he was about to get his second yellow in a match, and Bosingwa came in for him -- and has never looked back. Bosingwa has earned man-of-the-match type accolades for his NT play in a few games since.

And if you saw Miguel rolling around in the grass against Switzerland a few days ago, you'll also know why he's not there.

But what does Petit add? Veloso is the better player.
Petit is a containment player. I used to hate him because I thought he was worthless -- as you often only saw him when balooning a 30m shot into the stands. But he plays that hard-to-appreciate DM role. While not great at it, he's more consistent and stable than Veloso in that role. At least for now.

Tommy Smyth did some research on Nihat apparently. :lol2:

Where was all this information during the Turkey match...

Now all I hope for the rest of this match is some respectable play. If Portugal are going to stay in this, it has to come from their subs: Quaresma (if his attitude is right) or Nani. And while Gomes did score, Postiga has something to offer -- and often does -- as a supersub.

I appreciate that DM role, but I just haven't seen Petit do anything particularly special from all the matches I've seen him play for Portugal, which is quite a lot. I look at him and then look at our Zanetti, and say, WTF is this guy doing on this team? Sure, he does his job defensively, but everything else is mediocre.

Yet I suppose that doesn't matter when you have Deco and Ronaldo in front of him...

Bring on Quaresma.

 right after that he forgot his name again.
