Heh, who knows the exact reason. We can only speculate.
He is a son of one of the best and most famous Croatian players of all time. He grew up in a very rich family, with his father being a big football star, he had all the privilegies and he didn't need to work so hard as the other boys in order to make it to the first team.
But he was very talented, more talented than the other boys and you know how the talented kids always tend to work less than the others.

I know many basketball players from different european countries who play in Turkish basketball league and whenever they get a turkish passport they have to change their name to a Turkish one.
Of course, this is only for the name in the passport. They can use their real or their adopted name on their jerseys.
