I'm 100% serious.

I find it funny that some people place such an importance on somebody wearing an armband.

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct

The captain of a team has no special status or privileges under
the Laws of the Game but he has a degree of responsibility for the
behaviour of his team.

http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/federation/81/42/36/lotg_en.pdf
The official functions of the captain under the Laws of the Game are to participate in the coin toss prior to kick-off (for choice of ends and to determine who kicks off first) and prior to a penalty shootout. Captains have no special authority under the Laws to challenge a decision by the referee, however referees will sometimes talk to the captain of a side about the side's general behaviour.

In youth or recreational football, the captain often takes on duties that would at a higher level be delegated to the manager. The captain generally provides a rallying point for the team: if morale is low, it is the captain who will be looked at to boost his team's spirits.

Also, captains may join the manager in deciding the first team for a certain game.

Why didn't you highlight that bit?

A manager is more important than a captain. If a manager cannot motivate a group of players then there is something going wrong.
We're talking about on the pitch, not before the game, not after the game, not during half time..but on the pitch during game. Have you ever played a team sport?

thats not true, wc 2006 did you really think domenech lead france to the final? when infact the players had no motivation under him and looked to their captain zidane for inspiration, which he delivered

There are degrees of motivation. A few Man Utd players may have developed tinnitus from playing with Keane. Granted, not every captain is liable to slide tackle your car if you underperform in training, but they tend to have an input.

Yes I've played sport before and still do. Not once have I been lacking morale so much so I have to go to another player to help me keep my head up. It just doesn't happen as often as you lot are making out and ihappens even less especially at the highest level of football of football.

Anybody who thinks Lampard is a better player than Gerrard is an idiot, no matter whether he supports Chelsea, Liverpool, Juventus, AC Milan, Hull City, or Seattle Sounders.

As for the rest, I will respond to the idiocy a la carte later on.

Personally I thought Viera was more impressive at that tournament than Zidane and he was the leader there and guess what he didn't have the armband.

France had players like Viera, Gallas, Thuram, Sagnol, Makalele, Henry etc.

Zidane didn't have to do as much motivating as you'd like to think.

I play sports too and quite frankly my captain sucks ass, but my coach is about my only source of inspiration and motivation next to my pre match tunes including the rocky theme tune. However few seasons back My coach for the home city i play for was about as inspiring as Domenech on the end of a 10-0 defeat, but my captain lead us to fight our way out of relegation and infact ended up in a cup final that season for it.
