Yeah but Basel... what was that all about? Absolute embarrasment to the tournament. They were on their knees from the start of things and there was one situation that was particurlarly shocking. It was already 5-0 to Barca and like half an hour to play, Bojan Krkic alone with the keeper, completely alone that is; he has basically an open goal to put it in because the keeper already made his move - he then decides to try and chip it over the keeper instead of just sidefooting it home. He then laughs it off as if it was practice. I don't know, maybe it's time to make some modifications to this tournament.

Ban incompetent teams that stand no chance.

Don't you think Napoli or Man city would have done better than Basel for example?

Screw the 4 club per country rule, it's ridiculous. (Spain, Italy,England)

The best teams should play, it doesn't matter where they're from.

Basel, as Swiss champions deserve to play.

They also, if I'm not mistaken, got through two qualifying rounds.

If anything, they have more right than Juve to play in the Champions League, since they actually won their domestic league.

So what J red?

With all do respect to Swiss football, winning their domestic league isn't exactly impressive.

All I'm saying is that this swiss team must compete with 5th and 6th from Spain, Italy, and England. It doesn't make sense to me that teams like Milan and Napoli that rank in the top 10 or 15 in Europe at the moment, have to play in the Uefa cup.

If we replace Basel with Milan, Dynamo Kiev with Man city, don't you think we would have a more competitive C.L, hence, a more entertaining one to watch?
Is it fun to you watching incompetent teams getting mundanely hammered by Chelsea?

I know I'd rather watch a more competitive C.L where only the best in Europe get to play in.

Napoli do not rank in the top 10 or 15 in Europe, not even close. They didn't even make it to the group stage in the Uefa Cup. And you want them in the CL? They wouldn't last 2 seconds.

And tell me, how many times have Italian clubs succeeded in the Uefa Cup the last 10 years? How many winners? How many semi finalists? Because last time I checked almost all of them get knocked out at the very beginning.

Juve Rev, If a team wins their league they deserve to play in the Champions League.

The system of qualification rounds is already designed to ensure only one or two lesser team make it into the group stage.

It is a good thing that some smaller teams get into the CL now and again because it spreads the wealth. If only the best got in, the gap between the rich few clubs and the rest would just continue to grow and that would be bad for football.

I take the opposite view from yourself, I would like to see the CL go back to closer to the old European Cup format. More knockout football and only the top one or two teams from each country getting in.

I agree with juve red. It would also make the Uefa cup more prestigious.

Not to mention how competitive the top leagues would've been. Finishing third or fourth would no longer be acceptable.

I guess that's one way to view it. I see your point.

I just think it's a lot more reasonable if the champions league conisists of the strongest teams. However, you do make a good point about spreading the wealth, we wouldn't want a premieriship-like championship around anyway.,

I guess the point I was trying to make is enough of those nonsensical massacres. We have had anough games that end in 5 or 6 nothing defeats. I see it as brninging down the standard if anything. Teams like Milan can make the C.L a more prestigous one. That's just what I think.

Hey Ahmed, I think you're funny and entertaining, but how about you go a little easy on JuveRev? It's one thing to post a witty response, but you don't have to hound him like this.

JuveRev: this random act of kindness comes without any conditions.

Indeed.

If only the top two teams from the top leagues had made it into the CL this year you would have Liverpool, Arsenal, Barca, Athletico, Juve and Fiorentina in the UEFA Cup.

But there are very few games like that. Only one or two per season.

Should Copenhagen not be allowed in the UEFA Cup? My Aberdeen humped them 4-0 in the group stage last season.

Well, yes, there are always exceptions. However, that's not the point I was aiming for. What I mean is that teams that have no chance in the compeition, teams that don't have the players to trouble the big teams should have no part in the C.L.

Just answer this; would or wouldn't the C.L be stronger with likes of Milan and Man City?

When you come to think of it, the same could be said about Juve ;)
Very true, but because the UEFA Cup would become more prestigious, there would be more money in it.

It therefore wouldn't be as big a deal missing out on the CL.

Come to think of it, why don't I just become President of UEFA?
