Honestly, Italian teams have looked very embarrassing thus far in the Champions League. We have with this draw, Roma against Cluj, and also Viola with Steaua. Pretty bad for Italian football if you ask me.

But Totti isn't a striker like a Trezeguet or Amauri. It just doesn't make any sense. He should be playing behind the strikers or loan striker, but no, he's playing out of position. They rely on him not only to create, but to score as well. It's a friggin' trap.

The idea of using Totti as a striker it was because they had Mancini, so the guy could run direct to the goal and try to score. Kind of the tactic Cruyff used with his "total football". Now with Vucinic the tactic lose a bit of "sense" because he is supposed to be a "9", but they lose Mancini, he was a key player for Roma.

I didn't think much of it when they play Totti as striker. They played beautiful football, but Totti, being the only striker, wasn't in position to score a lot of times. That IMO would hamper their football.
But that's just me. I'd always use a goal scorer/poacher up top. It's the best way to go.

Italian teams won the European Cup/CL 11 times and were runners up 14 times, the English and the Spanish won it 11 times aswell but were runners up only 5 and 9 times. I know you meant the most recent history but still.
So what? He's a great player. But it's just stupid to play an attacking midfielder as a striker. It's dumb and Roma hurt due to that idiocy. They became even more dependent on Totti with that move.
