I don't know if you guys noticed, but the Russian teams hardly ever pass the group stages in CL.
The reason is simple. The Russian championship ends in September and while the others are in full force the Russians don't play competetive matches.

We'll play the first match against Zenit in early September while the return match will be in late November/early December.
We'll catch the Russian snow :D
Word X2

Btw, to prove what i was saying......

They crushed everyone in the spring, but look at their results in UEFA groups during the autumn and the winter :

Zenit 1 - 1 AZ ( October 25)
Larissa 2 - 3 Zenit ( November 11)
Zenit 2 - 2 Nürnberg (November 29)
Everton 1 - 0 Zenit (December 5)

They hardly passed the Uefa Cup group as 3rd placed, with only 1 point more than the 4th placed team.
I'm sure Zenit knows that, and after their performance last season, they will only improve on their displays during the same period of time this season. Playing them at the end of November is not something we should take nonchalantly. If we lose to Real Madrid in the prior match, we will have greater pressure on us going into the cold in St. Petersburg where anything could happen. What we need to do is win our first two matches, which we should, but then again Zenit beat Bayern 3-0 in Munich in the middle of their season.

Nobody should rule out anything yet and we better not draw against Zenit at home or we could be facing some trouble.

in our case it's the opposite in my opinion, if the group looks good enough for us to make it through then we d probably feel more comfortable investing as our risk has diminished
Perhaps, but what about Chiellini?

The only thing I don't like about Bate and Zenit, is the freezing temperature there, I know Torino is not a warm city, but playing over snow, I am not sure if we will manage to get points easily at away games.

If we get 6 from Bate, 3 from Zenit, 1 should be enough from madrid.
Good thing we are away to BATE in September, but yeah, I don't like going to Russia in late November. If they could conjure up a draw against us in the first Matchday, they will be looking forward to that date against us in November.

The ball is round for both teams.

The youngsters can learn a lot this season. Let's hope it's not in the poor mans trophy.
Our youngsters will learn a lot this season, one way or the other.

The ball is round, but if Zenit makes a 6point lead, it will be very difficult to turn around...
Zenit, with a six point lead and having the last games with us on their field and finally with the "unmotivated" Real has a much more chances to have the ball driven to her way...

The schedule sucks.
On the other hand, IF (with huge IF) we manage to win our home matches and we win away in Borisov as expected, this schedule will turn out to be even better than the previous one because we'll start with 9 points.

It's good that Chiellini will miss one match we should easily win without him (Bate) and the other match Giorgio will miss, home with Zenit, isn't as tough as the other three matches (Real x2 and Zenit away).

As Andy said, the opening match is a must win. No if's or but's. Home match against the direct rival is something we mustn't mess up.

I have little illusion to our chances: I will be happy to scrape through, but the longer we last will have a detrimental effect on our league position, I fear, as our squad could become threadbare.

I didn't highlight Juve-Roma because i think Roma also has a tough match in CL so it will be the same for both teams. But Inter have a very easy group and they'll probably secure the qualification before the 5th round and they can fully concentrate on the match with Juve.

This is why Amauri and Poulsen were bought. With some better cover for Chiellini and Camo having these games so close to eachother would've been no problem.
