Milan Player Ratings
Milan disappointed once again last night during the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Celtic. But how did their players perform? Carlo Garganese gives his ratings…
Dida: 3
The Brazilian should hang his head in shame. He was at fault for both of Celtic’s goals. For the first he totally missed Hartley’s corner kick, while for McDonald’s winner, Dida fumbled a weak Caldwell shot straight into the Australian’s path. Then of course there was the disgraceful playacting at the end after a fan ran onto the pitch and barely brushed the keeper’s neck. Shame on you!!!
Oddo: 6
The ex-Lazio man did reasonably well coming forward from right-back and whipped in two excellent crosses for Inzaghi early into the second-half. Was rarely troubled at the back.
Bonera: 6
Bonera had a sound game and did not have much to do defensively. However he is verbally very quiet on the pitch and will have to improve his communication if he is to harbour hopes of breaking into Roberto Donadoni’s Italy squad.
Nesta: 7
Nesta coped comfortably with the threat of McDonald. He made one outstanding challenge on Brown in the second minute but he could be partly blamed for not dealing with a long-throw that led to the corner for Celtic’s first goal.
Jankulovski: 6
Once again the Czech was rarely troubled defensively, although Nakamura did bamboozle him with a few step-overs before Celtic’s winner. Tried to burst forward from left-back but made little headway.
Gattuso: 5
Poor game from the Milan hardman. Gattuso looks in poor physical condition at the moment and needs a rest. This kind of match in wet conditions and on a slippery surface should have been perfect for the ex-Rangers man but he was off the pace.
Pirlo: 6
Not one of Pirlo’s best matches in a Milan shirt. Pirlo has been in magnificent form so far this season but the Celtic duo of Donati and Hartley closed him down at every moment. The playmaker did not have the time nor the space to pick out his trademark passes.
Ambrosini: 5
The stand-in captain worked hard but there was very little quality to go with it. His best contribution of the game was winning the penalty for Milan after a dubious tugging offence.
Seedorf: 4
Anonymous display from the inconsistent Dutchman. Seedorf is another player who looks in desperate need of a rest. The match with Celtic proved how Milan’s older players cannot cope with playing twice a week.
Kaka 7
Kaka was the only Milan player who looked capable of creating any magic. A couple of magnificent turns in the first-half, as well as a coolly taken penalty were the highlights of the Brazilians display. Kaka always looked dangerous but he did not have the support of his team-mates.
Inzaghi: 6
Inzaghi worked hard, however he was often left isolated up-front by himself. Inzaghi can still be a brilliant player but only if the team plays to his strengths. Pippo is not a lone striker – period. He cannot hold the ball up well enough. He needs someone alongside him otherwise it is pretty much pointless him being on the pitch.

Gourcuff: 5 (55mins for Seedorf)
Gourcuff was badly to blame for playing Scott McDonald onside for Celtic’s winner. The whole Milan defence pushed up after Caldwell’s original shot however the Frenchman was sleeping and McDonald was allowed to slot home the rebound.
Gilardino: 5 (77 minutes for Inzaghi)
Admittedly Gilardino only got 13 minutes to shine but unsurprisingly the striker was completely anonymous once again. Gilardino has to go – how long will it take for the Milan hierarchy to realise this! Ancelotti would have been better off bringing Zeljko Kalac on up-front.

Kalac did eventually come on after Dida’s disgraceful antics but by then the game was well into injury time. The Australian may play in the next Champions League game if Dida gets what he deserves and is banned by UEFA.

Should Dida Be Banned By UEFA?
Last night Celtic recorded one of their most famous ever European victories by beating European Champions Milan 2-1 at Celtic Park. However this wonderful achievement has been totally overshadowed by the unfortunate altercation involving Milan goalkeeper Dida and a Celtic fan. Goal.com wants to know what you think about the incident...
For those of you who have been living on another planet, let me just give a quick description of what happened.
Celtic Park had just erupted after Scott McDonald had scored what proved to be a 90th minute winner for Celtic. The excitement got too much for one fan who ran onto the pitch past Dida and brushed his hand against the Brazilian’s neck.
Dida immediately turned around as if to chase after the supporter, before suddenly deciding to throw himself to the ground as if he had been on the receiving end of a Mike Tyson upper-cut. The Milan medical staff arrived on the scene and applied ice to Dida’s face before stretchering him off the pitch.
Now I want to get one thing straight before I am bombarded with complaint after complaint. The Celtic supporter, who has today been banned by the club for life, should never have been allowed to get onto the pitch in the first place. It was a breach of security and there is no doubt that Celtic should be at least heavily fined by UEFA for the incident.
Nobody wants to see supporters running onto the pitch and confronting players and I dread to think of what could have happened if this supporter was carrying a knife or some other dangerous weapon.
However having watched yesterday’s episode again and again it is absolutely impossible not to condone the disgraceful behaviour of Dida himself.
The Brazilian, who had a stinker of a game and was at fault for both goals, was barely touched by the supporter as he ran past. The images of the keeper then having an icepack pressed against his face, before being stretchered off, were just an embarrassment.
One has to question Dida’s motive for reacting in such a way. He clearly was not hurt. The only explanation, as Clarence Seedorf said after the game, was that maybe he was in shock as he did not expect to be approached by the supporter.
The cynics among us will say that Dida knew that Milan had lost the game as their were only seconds remaining and so tried to make the most of the incident in the hope that Milan may be awarded the points by UEFA. Others will argue that Dida was just so embarrassed at being at fault for the winning goal that he tried to shift the blame in some way.
Unless UEFA sets a new precedent, it seems unlikely that Dida will be banned for his antics. Although in 1989 FIFA did once ban a player for life in a not too dissimilar scenario. Brazil were leading Chile 1-0 in a crucial World Cup Qualifier for Italia 90’. In the 67th minute a Brazilian fan threw a firework onto the pitch. The Chilean goalkeeper Roberto Rojas threw himself to the ground, with his head all bloodied, claiming he had been hit by the firework.
The match was abandoned and Chile tried to claim the game. However video evidence later proved that Rojas had not been hit by the flare and had in fact self-inflicted his wounds. Rojas was subsequently banned for life by FIFA, Brazil were awarded the game and Chile were excluded from the qualifiers for the 1994 World Cup in America.
The fact that Milan have announced that they won’t be taking legal action over the incident probably shows just how shamed they are by Dida’s actions. Milan are a proud club and Silvio Berlusconi prides himself on public (if not private) integrity. Yesterday’s scenes will probably have slightly embarrassed the whole establishment.
As for what happens to Celtic, well it is inevitable they will face a heavy fine and possibly a stadium ban in Europe. If the latter happens it will be a shame because, as Seedorf also said after the game, the Celtic fans are the best supporters in the world and it will be a shame if the idiocy of one man robs the Champions League of their presence.
