Mancio: We did all we could Tuesday 19 February, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roberto Mancini felt Inter did all they could at Anfield after playing with 10 men for an hour and losing Ivan Cordoba to injury.

Marco Materazzi was shown two very harsh bookings in the opening half-hour and the Nerazzurri eventually lost 2-0.

“I was already a little frightened after the first two yellow cards for Cristian Chivu and Materazzi, as having both central defenders booked within 10 minutes is dangerous,” said the Coach.

“Liverpool hadn’t created much, but kept us under pressure, so with 10 men for an hour my team could not have done more. Unfortunately the last five minutes proved decisive.”

Dirk Kuyt’s effort was deflected in off Douglas Maicon before Steven Gerrard completed the scoring in the final minute.

“Inter came on the field determined, but Liverpool put the pressure on in the opening 20 minutes, which is understandable on their home turf.

“Patrick Vieira unfortunately is not match fit, so I needed him more in the second half, hoping of course that we were XI vs. XI.”

Yet Mancini has some hope, as the only other time these teams crossed paths was in the 1965 European Cup.

Inter lost 3-1 at Anfield and won the second leg 3-0 at San Siro, going on to lift the trophy.

“It seems a coincidence, but perhaps the past comes back. We need three goals to qualify and clearly this side is capable of it, but we need to finish the match with all our players.

“I think the biggest problem we had here was being left with 10 men, but even then we didn’t run many risks and only conceded the first goal with a deflection off Maicon.

“When we lined up with four in midfield we were under more pressure, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic on his own upfront had a tough job. Cordoba’s injury was also damaging, as he was able to contrast Peter Crouch in the air.”

The Colombian defender was stretchered off during the second half as he fell awkwardly.

“Cordoba sprained his knee, so it is difficult to evaluate the extent of the damage now. We need a few more hours to see how it develops

Player Ratings: Liverpool – Inter

A weight was lifted off Rafael Benitez’s shoulders after two goals in the final ten minutes of the Champions League tie against ten-men Inter Milan gave Liverpool a big advantage ahead of the second leg at the San Siro.

LIVERPOOL

Reina 6.0: Pipe and slippers evening for the Spaniard. Not tested at all by the defensive Italians.

Finnan 7.5: The Irish fullback did well to keep the width on the right all night, linking well first with Kuyt and then with Pennant when the winger came on.

Carragher 6.5: Like his keeper the vice-captain had little to do but make sure Ibrahimovic never found room to hold the ball up and waste time. He also ventured effectively into Inter’s half in the second half to keep the pressure up.

Hyypia 7.0: Similar evening to Carragher, but recognised for his dominance in the air in defending from Inter’s rare corners and free-kicks.

Aurelio 7.0: Started brightly and advanced down the left flank well, but one feels he was given the nod over Riise because of his better ability on the ball. Unfortunately the Brazilian didn’t deliver on that side of things but still linked well with Babel.

Babel 6.5: The Dutchman worked in patches but was exciting when he did. He drifted inside to good effect and troubled the Inter defence with his pace and movement, but tired towards the end again.

Lucas 6.5: Was the first to be replaced in Benitez’s tactical shift, but that was more to do with the need to attack rather than anything lacking from his performance.

Mascherano 8.0: Once again an imperious display of how to win the ball back from the opposition and keep possession. Was Liverpool’s best player when Inter had all-eleven on the pitch as he consistently kept Inter out of the early part of the game.

Gerrard 8.5: Another captain’s performance from Stevie G. When the Reds’ game-plan became a little predictable he was, as usual, the only one trying to play through the middle with driving one-two’s. And of course he scored a peach of a goal late-on that could prove vital.

Kuyt 8.0: The workaholic ran the channels tirelessly again, but also produced where Liverpool needed it most: in front of goal! His shot may have taken a fortunate deflection off Maicon but a striker’s job is to score and that is what he did.

Torres 7.5: Although the hot-shot was quiet for large parts of the game, especially after half-time once Inter had dropped deep, his contribution in Materazzi’s dismissal was a key factor in the game. He started like a jack-in-the-box and was too hot for the Inter defence to handle, leading to the red-card. Came inches to the opener with a one-on-one with Cruz, perhaps shooting too early.

Substitutes

Pennant 6.5: Didn’t have time to do much, but it was his cross that led to the crucial first goal.

Crouch 7.0: The big-man caused problems instantly after coming on, forcing the Inter defence to drop deeper and concentrate less on others. Also showed nifty touches and could have scored at least one self-made half-volley.

INTER MILAN

Cesar 7.0: The Brazilian has to be given credit for a great save to deny Torres in a one-on-one situation. He could do nothing about the opener as it took a deflection, but Gerrard’s shot did seem to creep in a touch.

Maicon 7.0: Known for his attacking forays, the fullback showed his defensive qualities tonight as he constantly proved a sturdy wall against the duo of Babel-Aurelio. Unlucky about the deflection although staunch Italian defenders may say he should have been tighter to the striker.

Cordoba 8.0 : The Colombian was the best defender for Inter tonight. With backs-to-the-wall he seemed to be on the end of so many of Liverpool’s crosses. It is telling that after his injury Liverpool quickly scored twice.

Materazzi 4.0: The Matrix may feel harshly done by in his dismissal but many referees would have given a yellow for both of his fouls on Torres, who showed up the defenders lack of pace with alarming ease.

Chivu 7.5: Did well when shunted inside after his team-mate’s dismissal. Like Cordoba, Chivu defended stoutly for most of the game.

Stankovic 6.0: The attacking midfielder suffered after the team went down to ten-men, but still worked hard to close the Reds down, but ultimately had little to work off.

Cambiasso 6.5: Was easily beaten in the battle with fellow country-man Mascherano of best holding midfielder, but still worked hard for the cause.

Zanetti 6.5: The skipper showed leadership in leading the rare counter-attacks Inter managed on the night, and like his fellow midfielder he worked ever so hard to keep Liverpool penetrating through the middle.

Maxwell 6.0: Didn’t quite perform his duties as well as Maicon, instead Kuyt and then Pennant continuously found room to manoeuvre and cause damage. In the end the two goals came from his side of the field.

Ibrahimovic 4.5: Although going down to ten-men will always affect the strikers most, the Swede showed a shocking lack of effort to hold the ball up, or offer an outlet for his team-mates, or work the channels. Even when he did receive the ball his famed touch was absent.

Cruz 4.5: Like his strike-partner, had little to work on all evening, but showed nothing for the cause like the men behind him.

Substitutes

Vieria 6.0: The legendary enforcer has clearly lost his bite, but then again he hasn’t played much all season and it showed. He couldn’t shore up a draw for his team when he came on.

Burdisso 5.0: Only came on in the last few remaining minutes for Cordoba, but two goals were shipped in on his watch so he cannot be happy about that.

well at least there is one single :inter:ista talking truth

''I don't recall our team having a great offensive game in a long long time. In fact this year, we have hardly scored a decent goal. Most were penalties, offsides or defensive lapses.''

Benitez praises 'perfect' referee
Tuesday 19 February, 2008

Rafa Benitez insists Marco Materazzi’s dismissal was “a perfect decision from the referee.”

The 2-0 victory over Inter came after the Nerazzurri played an hour with 10 men, as Materazzi was shown two very harsh yellow cards.

“I think both bookings were clear and it was a perfect decision from the referee,” Benitez told Sky Italia television.

“Tonight the team did everything right, we held possession, put crosses in against a very strong side that defended very well.”

Benitez has been criticised for his squad rotation system, but some unusual decisions paid off at Anfield.

“I change the squad because I want to win. If you play the same line-up every week then at the end of the season you finish fourth. We don’t have as many options as Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal.”

The second leg is at San Siro on March 11 and Inter will have to achieve a massive victory to progress.

“We think Inter will attack us from the start and usually that is our approach. I knew Inter were a side of real quality and that was evident tonight as well,” added Benitez.

“We knew it was going to be tough, as Inter are good in attack and defence, so space was at a premium.”

The Liverpool boss knew his job was on the line if he failed here, having tripped up in all the other competitions this season.

“I think the players are great professionals who played for the club and, like myself and Liverpool, believe the Champions League is the most important competition.”

Ibrahimovic isn't even a choker, thats the maximum he can give.
He was made to dominate the likes of Reggina and such. That's why I was never pissed when he left. For anybody who wants to know what Juve material is, I can say what is not. Chokers are not for Juve. People like Zlatan, Cronaldo and Riquelme must stay far away. I rather less skillful players who step up when we need them.

True. Though I don't like C. Ronaldo but at least he adds something worthy watching. I never understand what some people see special in that zlatty. Seriously, he's not even close to be called a great player.

Oh, and to me Mascherano was definitely the man of the match. Liverpool need to buy him before they lose a great talent.
for me...as much as i hate to say it.....

cordoba was the best player on the park tonight, as soon as i seen him go down i knew it was a shocking injury, saidas much to my mate who had to wait for the replays to see how bad it was. he was immense tonight and though he is an inter cocksucker, that was a tremendous defensive performance before he went off injured. he went off and pool scored 2, coincidence?i doubt it, he marshalled the backline well and hed them all them all drilled, he also made some great last-ditch challenges.

ok i feel dirty now:inter:
