Roma set new records
Tuesday 10 April, 2007

Roma return from Old Trafford with a series of records under their belts – although none of them will be particularly welcome.

The 7-1 loss to Manchester United will go down in history for a number of different reasons. This was Roma’s worst ever European defeat, as in the previous 209 continental games they had at most conceded four in one match.

The most recent capitulation on that scale was 4-2 with Real Madrid on September 29, 2004 in the Champions League group phase.

The Giallorossi had already tasted a 7-1 loss in Serie A twice – to Torino on October 5, 1947 and Juventus on March 6, 1932.

No Italian side had ever lost by such a margin in the quarter-finals of the European Cup. Juventus had done even worse in 1958, falling 7-0 to Wiener, but it was in the first round.

In 1974, Milan were thrashed 6-0 by Ajax in the European Super Cup. Sampdoria lost 6-0 in the Fairs’ Cup to Ferencvaros and Lazio were crushed by the same scoreline in the UEFA Cup with Lens.

However, it is not a record for the Champions League, as Juventus beat Olympiakos Pireo 7-0 in the group phase on December 10, 2003.

Nor is it the match with the most goals, as Monaco famously demolished Deportivo La Coruna 8-3 on the same day as that Juve victory.

Manchester United cannot even mark it down as their biggest European triumph, as they beat Anderlecht 10-0 in the opening round of the European Cup on September 26, 1956 – it was also their first ever home game in Europe.

Roma and the Red Devils had never crossed paths before, but the Capital club have often struggled on British soil.

They have now won once, beating Liverpool 1-0 in the 2000-01 UEFA Cup that did not prevent their elimination, drawn four and lost seven.

Over the two legs Roma have qualified four times against English sides and lost out on six occasions.

Manchester United have won 10 of their matches at Old Trafford against Italian clubs, drawn two and lost as many.

Their record against the Serie A sides is of three qualifications and four exits.

my predictions: Chelsea champions of Europe. Either Sheva scoring the winning goal against Milan in the final, or Chelsea beating Utd in the final

on a night like this you really would consider the idea of platini to reduce bigger leagues champions league spots. atleast then we wouldnt have 3 english clubs in last 4 nor see such humilations as happened today in OT.

edit: heck next year is gona be same with lazio getting cl spot. :howler:

it i possible that going into the last week of the season Man U and Chelsea go both be going for 3 competitions. Both going for EPL, play each other in CL and FA cup finals. Would be an incredible end to the season.

Chelsea are currently still going for the quadruple sine they won the league cup already.

But you have to admit, Andries has a point.
I didn't even know what they are arguing about (I didn't read) , it's the line is bothering me, this shit is everywhere :D

I love it how he called it "Basic logic", if he says so then it becomes a rule, no need to discuss about it :D

I think Alexander will start supporting ManU again after this evening.

lol De Rossi's goal was better than all MU goals together :p
De Rossi's goal is one of the best I've ever seen in my life. Class in every single word.

the fvckin italian federation should change the rules and let the champs of serie B play in CL. They will be at least good represents for the country :agree:
I really wanted Juventus to be in that game....and Ale taking one of those multi freekicks Roma had tonight.

Spalletti should know English teams get at you the first 20 minutes. It's his job to prevent they do. Seeing it was 3-0 after 20 minutes, Spalletti fucked up. It's that simple. Go coach a Serie D side, man.
I think Spalletti proved that he's another overrated coach. When Roma conceded first two goals he should have atleast made a subs or tactical changes to stop Roma's childish way of attacking. They attacked each time they conceded like amateurs. When you concede a goal or two ffs, just calm the game down and try to see how you can attack, not immediatly push like a mad men.

I think if Chelsea fails to qualify tonight, they're gonna win the Premier League.
With such a brilliant coach, they can win both.

f*cking hell doni cant even pick up a loose ball like that!
50% of Roma's defeat is because of Doni.

Doni is the worst keeper I have seen in a long time in Europe.

Manure gets a record against an Italian team... wonderful.
I really have no fucking idea why he was standing two to three meters infront of his goal when Carrick scored his two goals. He's indeed the worst keeper I have seen since while now.

rooney is a little overrated pig and c.ronaldo is arrogant little b.stard

Roma conceding that early goal was really the killer blow. Doni was far off his line for some reason and Carrick easily lofted the ball over his head. Why the fuck Doni would try to cut down the angle of a shot when he had his whole defensive line in front of him I don't have a clue... I'm no keeper, only a midfielder, but I thought keepers were taught to stay closer to the goal line when the only real possibility for a shooter is to loft the ball over his head..

After such a ridiculous goal the Roma defense looked nervous and they started taking risky chances, thus being caught out with the Alan Smith goal and also with the Ronaldo goal which should have been saved by Doni. I don't even know if I have seen such etrocious keeping in the Champions League before and Roma was imbecilic for being caught out three times straight as everybody knows Manure can counterattack with the best of them. But Manure is not this good of a club to beat another team 7-1 in the Champions League... it's just that Roma and Spalletti really choked on this occasion and Manure was extremely lucky a fucking piece of shit was in goal for the Giallorossi tonight. I would rather see Chelsea or Liverpool win the European Cup before Manure as this team is just overrated shit and whenever they win all the small-minded football fans come out and sing their name, as seen with the English commentators today and every other match Manure plays. If there was one club I could make cease to exist it would be those faggots from Manchester.. at least their fans got fucked up in Rome.. that was pleasing to see.

Chelsea and Mourinho are lucky to progress as they were not clearly the better team over the two legs. Canizares should have saved the Essien goal, another near post goal seen today, and Morientes could have scored three times if he was not the overrated striker that he is. But Mourinho will get all the credit again despite him not really deserving it and people on this forum will go gaga over the fact he will probably reach another final. I admit he's a great manager but people really need to put things into perspective here.... if Jose doesn't win the Champions League with this squad during his career perhaps he isn't the manager people think he is. For fucks sake he has by far the best roster in world football.

God, tomorrow everyone's going to wear their Manchester United jerseys, especially all the girls who fell in love with Beckham at MUFC four years ago. Oh well, I suppose you don't send a Roman to do a man's job, eh? :D

If I see a Manure fan walking around campus tomorrow I swear to God I will tell him/her I hope his side is involved in an aircraft crash.

Same goes for an idiot wearing a Roma shirt. If anything they should put their colors away in the closet until November.
