Greek club Olympiakos have signed Haruna Babangida on a three-year contract worth over two million euros (about 340 million naira) after the player shone like a million stars in pre-season friendlies against Valencia and Udinese.

Olympiakos have also bought the three years remaining of his contract at Mettalurg Donetsk, who he joined last year.

“I’m very delighted with this transfer as it will afford me the chance to play in the Champions League,” Babangida told KICK OFF on Tuesday.

“I enjoyed the two games I played with the team which also includes top players like Rivaldo. Their passing game suits me nicely.”

‘Daddy’ scored a goal against Valencia before he netted a brace against Udinese.

The 22-year-old forward has held a lot of promise since his days at the famous Ajax soccer school and later at Catalan giants Barcelona.

Champions’ League Third Qualifying Round Preview
8/23/2005 1:56:00 AM
The second leg fixtures of the Champions’ League Third Qualifying Round take place this week as thirty-two teams fight it out to make it into the Group Stage of the world’s premier club competition. As always there are shocks on the verge of completion by the minnows and there are also the big clubs whose very financial well-being will be determined by whether they qualify for the lucrative Group Stage of the competition.
The matches begin on Tuesday evening with nine fixtures on tap, the most high-profile and evenly-matched of these being Monaco against Real Betis. The Spaniards are in the competition for the first time and take a slim one-goal lead into the second leg after Edu scored in the 90th minute in the first match between the two sides. Monaco, beaten finalists in the 2003/04 Champions’ League final, will be confident of overturning the small deficit they face, but Didier Deschamps’ side will have to do so without Uruguayan forward Javier Chevanton. Reigning European champions Liverpool face CSKA Sofia at Anfield with the security of a 3-1 lead from the first leg. While few doubt Liverpool will have much trouble disposing of the Bulgarian outfit, Tuesday’s match should be a good test for Rafa Benitez’s men as they will be without their influential captain Steven Gerrard, who suffered a calf injury at the weekend.

Panathinaikos, perennial participants in the Group Stage, have a difficult task on their hands when they host Wisla Krakow at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. The Greeks must overturn a 3-1 scoreline from the first leg and avoid the defensive lapses that saw them concede three goals after they took the early lead in Poland. Udinese-Sporting was one of the highlight pairings of the Third Qualifying Round of the competition, but Udinese is hoping for little drama as they take a 1-0 lead back home for the return fixture. Sporting, finalists in the UEFA Cup last season, will need to score in Italy or else they will only have the solace of the UEFA Cup for yet another season.

Rosenborg’s late goal against Steaua Bucharest two weeks ago gives the Norwegians a much more straightforward task in the second leg. Thorstein Helstad’s 85th minute strike broke Romanian hearts after Steaua had controlled large portions of the first match. Now, Rosenborg, champions of Norway 13 consecutive times, seem to have the upper hand.

Anderlecht take a slim lead into the return leg of their match-up with Slavia Prague. The Czechs managed a vital away goal and will know that victory by a score of 1-0 or by a two-goal margin will see them through. Anderlecht limbered up for Tuesday’s crucial match by disposing of Germinal Beerschot at the weekend 3-1.

Two of the biggest Champions’ League surprises in recent years could occur on Tuesday night as FC Thun and Artmedia Bratislava attempt to qualify for the Group Stage for the first time. Thun, the Swiss League runners-up, knocked out Dynamo Kiev in the previous round and now after a 1-0 victory in Sweden against Malmo appear set to stun Europe yet again. A victory or a draw will see the Swiss through and surely that would be this year’s Cinderella story in the competition. Not to be outdone is Artmedia Bratislava, the Slovakian outsiders who were conquerors of Celtic in the Second Qualifying phase. Artmedia earned a 0-0 draw against Partizan Belgrade at home, but now face the difficult task of either defeating Partizan away or achieving a score draw in order to progress. Partizan meanwhile will be confident after creating numerous chances in the first leg, but coming away with nothing after some wayward finishing.

Finally, Lokomotiv Moscow looks to finish the job at home against Rapid Vienna. The first leg in Austria ended 1-1 and Lokomotiv, with the away goal, are favourites to qualify.

Wednesday evening gives us seven more matches and though more than half of these fixtures look decided, there is always the potential for a surprise in this competition, one need only look at last season’s Champions’ League final in order to realize this.

Manchester United should have little trouble in their trip to Hungary. A 3-0 victory at Old Trafford against Debrecen looks to have settled the tie for the Red Devils. Inter Milan also seems to have qualification all wrapped up against Shakhtar Donetsk. A 2-0 win in the Ukraine has all but decided this match-up and if Shakhtar cannot conjure up what would be the unlikeliest of comebacks, it will mean that no Ukrainian clubs will be a part of this year’s Champions’ League.

Everton face a tall task in overturning a 2-1 score in Spain against Villarreal. The Spanish side, like Betis also in the competition for the first time, scored an impressive victory in England and will fancy their chances at home against a depleted Everton side decimated by early-season injuries.

Ajax nearly lost against Brondby a fortnight back, but an own-goal in the 90th minute spared Dutch blushes and gave Danny Blind’s team a 2-2 draw in Denmark. The smart money is on Ajax at home, but it may end up being a trickier affair than the men from Amsterdam might like.

Basle have the chance to return to the Champions’ League for only the second time. The Swiss, under the guidance of Christian Gross, defeated Werder Bremen 2-1 in the first leg and look to keep that advantage intact when they travel to Germany Wednesday night. Basle were two goals up until Miroslav Klose struck for Werder, 17 minutes from time in the first match between the two clubs. Werder are looking to bounce back from last season’s embarrassing knockout stage exit to Lyon, while Basle are hoping to have another good crack in the competition, akin to 2002/03 campaign when the club turned many heads by qualifying for the old 2nd Group Stage.

Rangers have seemingly done the hard part in their quest to qualify for the Group Stage. The reigning Scottish champions beat Anorthosis in Cyprus 2-1 to make the return leg in Glasgow look that much easier, though the Cypriots can not be counted out after disposing of Trabzonspor in the previous round.

Finally, Valerenga are seeking their first-ever Champions’ League spot and will be included in this Thursday’s draw for the Group Stage should they maintain their 1-0 lead from the first leg against Club Brugge. Steffen Iversen’s goal is all that separates the sides for now, though one suspects that the Norwegians will find life more difficult in Belgium.

Existential question of the day: if Inter win against Shakhtar, and there is no one there to witness it, do they advance?

Hmmm.... ;)

Empty stadium worries Inter coach Mancini

ROME, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini fears the effect of an empty San Siro stadium on his players, despite their 2-0 lead for the second leg of their Champions League qualifier against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

Inter are playing the first of four matches behind closed doors, a punishment by UEFA following crowd trouble during their Champions League quarter-final against city rivals AC Milan in April.

"We'll have to do our best in an unreal situation. I've never experienced anything like it before and I don't think it will be pretty," Mancini was quoted as saying on the club's official website on Tuesday.

"Beyond that, however, we really want to do well, because it will not be an easy match, despite our (two-goal) advantage.

"Shakhtar played a very good first 15 minutes in the first leg, partly because their physical condition is better than ours at the moment.

"Then we started to play as we know how and began to put them under pressure."

Even without their usual colourful support, Inter remain firm favourites to reach the group stage of the competition.

A successful close-season tour of England and a 1-0 victory over Serie A champions Juventus in the Italian Supercup final at the weekend were the highlights of their pre-season preparation.

Inter striker Obafemi Martins is Mancini's chief injury concern.

The 20-year-old Nigerian opened the scoring in the first leg against the Ukrainian side two weeks ago, but picked up a muscle strain in an international match against Libya last week.

"On Saturday (in the Italian Supercup final), Martins played despite being in pain, so he's not feeling great," said Mancini.

"But there's still time so the hope is to be able to get him back into shape."

Udinese enjoy Euro emotions Tuesday 23 August, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Serse Cosmi and his players were overjoyed and moved by their remarkable achievement and thank Luciano Spalletti for reaching the Champions League.

“I think that, without hypocrisy, the credit for this goes to a club that had to complete the work it had done last season,” said a very moved Cosmi at the final whistle of their 3-2 victory over Sporting Lisbon.

“This incredible squad has allowed me to live this experience, but the merit is all for the players, the club and former Coach Luciano Spalletti. It was better than I could ever have hoped.”

The Friuli outfit was already leading 1-0 from the first leg in Lisbon and put in a great performance to eliminate last year’s losing UEFA Cup Finalists in a five-goal thriller.

“It was a spectacular encounter and we proved that this team is more than capable of playing quality football at this level. Until the last moment it was a determined and entertaining match with chances for both sides, which is probably because we aren’t used to this kind of pressure situation.”

It was certainly a rollercoaster ride for the fans, who saw Sporting repeatedly fight back to leave the result in doubt until the final whistle.

“The only moment when I got nervous was when Sporting scored the goal for 2-1, as going into the break was the worst time to concede and it hit our confidence. Most of our players haven’t got the experience to perhaps deal with that emotional blow, but they did and I am proud of them.”

Now Cosmi will get the opportunity to make his debut in Europe's most prestigious tournament, having previously led Perugia into the Intertoto and UEFA Cup.

“For everyone who works in football, it’s their dream to hear the Champions League anthem and to put themselves up against the very best. Our entrance into this competition isn’t just as tourists, so we will try to win every match we play against any opposition. If I am here now today, it is thanks to so many people who have helped me along the years.”

In both Portugal and Udine, Vincenzo Iaquinta opened the scoring from the penalty spot with a cool conversion.

“I wanted so much to hear the Champions League anthem when I stepped on to the pitch,” said the Italian international. “It’s impressive when you watch on television, so imagine feeling it from here! It really is an historic moment.”

The Sporting Coach was very vocal in his protests for this penalty when Iaquinta fell under a challenge from goalkeeper Ricardo.

“Nobody can deny we deserved to qualify, as we dominated this match and fully earned our place in the competition,” insisted the striker. “I got the ball with the tip of my toe and it was enough, as the goalkeeper then caught my trailing leg. It was a clear penalty.”

Captain Valerio Bertotto was able to play this match with a heavy bandage to his head, having required 40 stitches for a wound he suffered during the first leg in Portugal.

“We had been dreaming of this moment for such a long time and had skimmed it in the past. To live this moment is extraordinary, as we came fourth in Serie A and are now among Europe’s elite,” said the veteran defender. “It’s the icing on the cake and above all the result of all the good work we did last year.”

I am honestly quite shocked given the team's mass exodus. But then hey -- Cosmi is capable of pulling surprises.

CL Wrap: Betis, Udinese Through, Champions Qualify
8/23/2005 11:40:00 PM
Real Betis will play Champions League football for the first time in their history after holding Monaco to a 2-2 draw in France.
Ricardo Oliveira put the Spaniards 1-0 ahead on the night and 2-0 up on aggregate, but goals from Gerard and Maoulida brought Monaco back into the tie. However, a second from Oliveira on 75 sent Betis through.

Udinese led Sporting Lisbon 1-0 from the first-leg and went 2-0 up on aggregate thanks to a Vincenzo Iaquinta penalty. Cesare Natali made it 2-0 on the night but Douala reduced the arrears. Brazilian strikerBarreto made sure for Udinese in the 89th minute, with Pinilla scoring a consolation for Sporting.

European champions Liverpool made it into the group stages despite losing 1-0 to CSKA Sofia. Iliev scored the only goal of the game to give the Bulgarians victory on the night, but they go out 3-2 on aggregate.

Thun will also play Champions League football for the first time in their history after goals from Bernardini and Lustrinelli (2) handed them a 3-0 win over Malmo. Thun go through 4-0 on aggregate.

Rosenborg made the Champions League for the tenth successive season with a 3-2 win over Steaua Bucharest. Solli, Ødegaard, and Radoi (og) put them 3-0 up on the night and 4-1 up on aggregate, before Radoi scored up the right end and Iacob netted to set up a tense finale.

Panathinaikos needed extra time to overcome Wisla Krakow in Athens. The Greeks, trailing 3-1 from the first-leg, went 2-0 up through Morris and Olisadebe. Sobolewski looked like sending the visits through but a late Papadopoulos strike saw the match into extra-time. Kotsios’ 114th minute effort handed the Greeks a 5-4 aggregate win.

A late goal from Kincl handed Rapid Vienna a 1-0 win over Lokomotiv Moskow in Russia. The Austrians go through 2-1 on aggregate.

In the night’s other match Petrzalka beat Partizan Belgrade on penalties after a 0-0 draw
