Primera Liga Report: Levante Humiliate Poor Madrid

A first half penalty from former Pichichi Salva Ballesta saw Levante Real Madrid 1-0 at the Bernabeu, and heap more misery on the embattled Los Merengues...

Ballesta, just brought in on loan from Malaga for the rest of the season, showed that he still had the temperament for the big game, as he withstood tremendous pressure at the Bernabeu and tucked away a 10th minute penalty.

It was a goal that proved to be the winner, but not before Levante had to produce some desperate defending towards the end. The 1-0 result by no means flattered the minnows.

Madrid, for their part, only turned it on during the final quarter, but it was a little too late, as Levante found inspiration from the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

The Bernabeu faithful responded by booing the team off the pitch, with Capello - and even president Ramon Calderon - coming in for criticism.

Real Madrid: Casillas - Salgado, Helguera, Ramos, Torres - Higuain, Diarra, Guti, Reyes (Robinho, Nieto) - Raul, Van Nistelrooy.

Levante: Molina - Maluolo, Dehu, Alexis, Rubiales - Riga, Tomassi, Camacho, (Robert) Ettien, Kapo (Berson) - Salva Ballesta (Reggi).

Goals: 0-1: Salva Ballesta (10', pen.)

yeah canna is injured, it wont make a massive difference if he was in the starting line up. the team looks dead and capello is losing control over the entire team, his tactics are being out played badly. serves him right bec he never learns the lesson.

Osasuna-Barcelona 0:0 Giuly had a "regular" goal disallowed, Eto´o came back to the squad. Once again Barcelona proved they are not the same squad without Ronnie, Eto´o and Messi on form.

Capello is blaming everyone but himself for the defeat.

Anyway, the table is more and more interesting:

1 Barcelona 21 12 7 2 43 : 18 +25 43
2 Sevilla 21 13 3 5 41 : 21 +20 42
3 Valencia 21 12 3 6 32 : 18 +14 39
4 Real (M) 21 12 2 7 28 : 18 +10 38
5 Atlético (M) 21 10 6 5 27 : 17 +10 36
6 Zaragoza 21 10 5 6 33 : 22 +11 35
7 Recreativo 21 10 3 8 31 : 28 +3 33
8 Getafe 21 9 5 7 18 : 14 +4 32
9 Racing 21 7 8 6 20 : 24 -4 29

You were no good Beckham, says Real coach Capello

Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello launched a blistering attack on David Beckham even though the former England skipper played no part in the embarrassing 1-0 defeat to lowly Levante.

Capello said in early January that Beckham would never play again for Real after the midfielder announced he was moving to Los Angeles Galaxy.

In recent weeks he has appeared to back track on his decision but the Italian made it clear again on Sunday that Beckham had no hope of ever being recalled even though he is contracted until the end of June.

"Beckham doesn't do anything for me. In his three years here, the results were not too good. Now we are looking for a new way, another direction and we are waiting for important players to recover," said Capello, after being asked whether he thought the Beckham could yet be the answer to Real's problems.

The player himself watched the game from the Bernabeu's VIP seats but television pictures showed him repeatedly fiddling with his mobile phone and clearly less-than-concerned about Real's tepid performance.

Beckham or no Beckham, the dilemma for Capello remains: how can his team improve on a sorry scoring record which has seen only two leagues goals scored since the start of the year?

"We had six or seven chances to score and three penalties were not given. They had one shot on goal, the result was unfair," whined Capello.

"This was a tough team with its backs against the wall and we played well in the air. We also had bad luck when shot went off the post."

Capello had to face the wrath of the near-capacity 75,000 crowd calling for his head at the end of the game, which was the 1000th to be staged in Real's historic Santago Bernabeu stadium.

"The coach always has to take the blame for everybody. I'm not thinking about resigning," said Capello.

"I always say that because I remain convinced that we will win something this season. The whistling was fair, it always happens when things aren't going well."

Nevertheless, courting controversy once more, Capello did praise one section of the crowd and in doing so will probably alienate himself even more from many Real supporters.

"I am grateful to the Ultras because (at least) they were helping us," commented Capello, paying tribute to Real's notorious group of followers which contains a significant element of members of the extreme right.

Adding to the humiliation, the win for Levante was their first ever in eight league encounters.

Two seasons ago, when Levante were last in the Spanish first division, Real beat their visitors from Valencia 5-0 in the same fixture.

I can't believe I would ever side with Beckham in this discussion, however Capello is simply an idiot. Your side just lost to a mediocre team at home and all you can do is state how David Beckham is terrible. He didn't even play FFS.

Well, I think to some extent the dip in Barca's form is due to a line of reasons. First of all they have played too many matches. Last season they played 16 CL matches, 38 La Liga matches + Copa del Rey. Then came the world cup and essentially 90% of Barca's players were somehow involved in the tournament, whether it was qualifying or the main tournament. After the world cup - a short break of maybe 3-4 weeks before preseason training began except for those who partizipated in the WC. The new season kicks off with still the same massive amount of matches that not only tears on the physical power but also the mental power. In December there was also the WC for clubs.

So they are tired, mentally as well as physically. Add to that Rijkaards hardest job is to motivate a team that was so superior for the last 2 seasons and you find FC Barcelona in a weakened state.

The return of Eto'o will definately give them a boost. But they will still suffer because of the excessive pressure they have been subjected to the last 1 and a half year.
