Real Madrid have agreed a deal to sign highly rated Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain for a reported fee of €13million (£8.1m) from River Plate, Marca said on Thursday.
The radio station said that the 19-year-old wunderkind, who has been courted by a number of top European sides, had agreed to sign a six and a half-year deal with the nine-times European champions
River finance chief Hector Grimberg held talks with Real directors Franco Baldini and Pedja Mijatovic on Wednesday and although the Spanish club only wanted to pay €10m River held out for the full amount.
'It's great to have the chance of playing for such an important club as Real Madrid. I feel proud that Madrid has noticed me,' Higuain told Marca during the negotiations.
The youngster shot to prominence last May when he scored twice as River Plate beat Brazilian champions Corinthians 3-1 to knock them out of the Libertadores Cup.
He scored twice more in the 3-1 win over arch-rivals Boca Juniors in October.
Higuain, who was born in France of Argentine parents and moved to the South American country when he was less than a year old, turned down a call-up from France in November.
He will be eligible to play for Madrid once the transfer window opens on January 2.
