Three England players feature on the 30-man shortlist for FIFA's World Player of the Year award. :wth:

Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are among 12 Premiership players in contention for the prize which will be awarded in Zurich on December 18.

Lampard came second behind Ronaldinho in last year's awards, but this year's competition is expected to come down to a contest between Fabio Cannavaro, captain of World Cup winners Italy, and Arsenal's French striker Thierry Henry, a losing finalist in both the Champions League and the World Cup.

The head coaches and captains of all national teams will now vote for their best players from the shortlist. :flirt:

Meanwhile, Arsenal's striker Kelly Smith is the only England player on the shortlist for the women's player of the year award.

FIFA World Player of the Year shortlist: Adriano (Inter Milan, Brazil), Michael Ballack (Chelsea, Germany), Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus, Italy), Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid, Italy), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Portugal), Petr Cech (Chelsea, Czech Republic), Deco (Barcelona, Portugal), Didier Drogba (Chelsea, Ivory Coast), Michael Essien (Chelsea, Ghana), Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona, Cameroon), Luis Figo (Inter Milan, Portugal), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan, Italy), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool, England), Thierry Henry (Arsenal, France), Kaka (AC Milan, Brazil), Miroslav Klose (Werder Bremen, Germany), Philippe Lahm (Bayern Munich, Germany), Frank Lampard (Chelsea, England), Jens Lehmann (Arsenal, Germany), Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan, Italy), Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan, Italy), Franck Ribery (Marseille, France), Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal, Argentina), Ronaldinho (Barcelona, Brazil), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United, England), Tomas Rosicky (Arsenal, Czech Republic), Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea, Ukraine), Lilian Thuram (Barcelona, France), Patrick Vieira (Inter Milan, France), Zinedine Zidane (retired, France). :rolleyes2

mark83 has a good point.

Emission of Toni from the list is scandalous. What did likes of Klose, Rosiky, Patrick Viera, Zizou, and Thuram do to deserve their place in the regular season ahead of a guy who banged in goals for fun last season.

Also didn't Lahm missed most of last year with serious injury? I love Lahm as a player - really really good player but playing couple of outstanding matches against pitiful opponents such as Ecuador, Poland, and Costa Rica doesnt quite qualify as having a good season. The list is too long anyway.

I guess FIFA player year award and Balon' dor suffers from opposite deficiencies. The former hands out award based on reputations whereas the latter weighs in too much of above average performance from players that are good but not outstanding. Who would believe that Michael Owen winning the thing, and Lampard coming second. I like Lampard for his true professionalism but come on - he ain't second best player in Europe. Anyone who argues such is the case is being a homer.

Adriano, Drogba, Figo, Gattuso, Klose, Lahm, Ribery, Nesta, Rooney, Rosicky, Shevchenko, Viera, Thuram - Ridicoulus (maybe Drogba because of his display for I. Coast and Klose because he was WC top scorer deserved to be on the list for Fifa Player of the year, but others are there just because they are big names in EU football and nothing else)

They should put Beckham on the list :D

when are all of u gonna learn that this is all a joke. the only respected award is the Ballon D'or, they looks at statistics and individual match ratings. not this stupid beauty/popularity contest. its gonna end up going 2 ronnie or zidane, where players like Henry, Fabio C, Buffon deserve it more.

The Fifa award is given after each NT coach and captain vote for a player, So some guy from Zimbabwe who only knows Ronaldinho after crying of laughter from watching pepsi commercials is gonna vote for the name he knows. You think the Lebanese coach can get past the belief that Ronaldo is still 21 and is the best player in the world, i dont think so.

:agree:

FIFA was always a joke - in making football games for PC and in voting for best footballer of the year.

I m very much looking for Golden Ball election.

You were right Stripper, Ballon d Or is something completely different from FIFA award. Whoever wins that award completely deserves it as it is not a choice for best Hairstyle of the year or etc...

They put all those players in the list just to make it more tense who will win the award.

Maybe 10 players in last season really deserved an award for a great season and performances - when I shortlist them, I can think of Etoo, Ronaldinho, Cannavaro, Zambro, Toni, Henry, Ribery, Kaka, Torres or Villa, Riquelme and that is pretty much it.

Somebody can correct me by removing or adding players to my list.

Well, this is not the important one, but it would be nice to see Henry win it - and of course the Ballon d'Or that he will win.

ADRIANWHO!? Why am I not in the list?
