Seven figure pay-off for West Ham flop
West Ham United have reportedly given flop striker Benni McCarthy between £1.5 million and £2m just to leave the club.
The South African striker signed from Blackburn Rovers for £2.25m in January last year and the Hammers have been paying him £38,000 a week in wages.
However, the 33-year-old has had a terrible time at Upton Park – failing to score in any of his 14 appearances.
He has been completely left out of Avram Grant's 25-man squad, and the club even fined him £200,000 at one stage for failing to control his weight.
With 15 months still left on his contract, West Ham decided to cut their losses and give him a huge pay-off rather than let him wait out his contract, which would have seen him pocket another £2.3m.
There are various reports on how much the Hammers have paid McCarthy to leave the club with the Daily Mail saying it was £1.5m while the Sun claim it was actually £2m.
If it is the latter amount, then it would mean McCarthy cost West Ham a total of £6.75m for his spell at the club.
A statement on the West Ham website simply said: "West Ham United have mutually agreed with Benni McCarthy to part company with immediate effect. The club would like to wish Benni the best for the future."
West Ham tried to send McCarthy out on loan in January but potential clubs baulked at his wage demands.
