Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has become the first player to break through the £200,000–a-week barrier.
Toure completed a £24 million move from Barcelona last week and the News of the World claims he has signed a five-year deal worth £55.6 million.
The Ivory Coast international is believed to be earning an initial £185,000-a-week, but that will increase to £221,000 when the government’s 50 per cent tax bracket comes into force.
The report suggests Toure will also get an image rights payment of £1.65 million-a-year, plus an additional £823,000 and £412,000 bonus each time City qualifies or wins the Champions League respectively.
