Just looking at some figures for Portsmouth, they actually ended up making a profit in terms of transfers over the last 5 seasons of about £17m, after the firesale of Defoe, Crouch, Kranjcar, Glen Johnson, Kaboul and Begovic for a combined £55m.

It shows how much money they were spending on player wages, even £60,000 per week for crap like Utaka. They also brought in many loan players during this period, of considerable stature for their club, so that is even more in wages and loan fees.

For a club with an average attendance of 17,000-18,000 it is unsustainable.

Well at least they won a trophy in the past 5 years :D
What trophy would that be?

Please don't tell me you consider the Carling Cup a trophy. As it is a Mickey Mouse competition. Hell we reached the final a few years ago, and played the second team, thats how seriously we take that joke of a tournament.

FA Cup, EPL and European competitions are the real trophies, unless you win one of those, you haven't won shit in my books.

Oh come on Fred!

You reached the final just to lose by Chelsea althought you had the lead through Walcott, I think Drogba had a double then. And since that day it was the last final you guys played.

Winning a shitty cup (according to you here) is better than winning zip in my books.

Do you remember that final??

We played with our second fiddle team. Of course we lost to Chelsea. If Arsene had really given a shit about that tournament he would have played his first team, wouldn't you think??

Yes I do.
Fabregas, Diaby and Baptista are some of those who started the match.

Fred, all Im saying is that winning that cup matters for every coach, just not for Wenger who by the way plays his reserves in the FA Cup too. Although according to you too, its a great trophy. And that's what resulted in Arsenal not winning a single trophy for more than 5 years now.

Finishing 4th in the league is better than finishing 8th.
And so is finishing the season with a trophy better than finish empty handed.

Baptista was 4 choice striker at the time and Diaby was 5th choice central midfielder at the time. If anything, the fact that you mentioned those two names is proof of what i said, and that is that Wenger played his second team out there.

So, if it was such an important trophy, how come Wenger didn't play his full strength team??

@ your last statement, that cannot be applied all the time. So if a team say plays in the CL and reaches the final and loses, and gets second place in its domestic league, while another team is 5th place in its domestic league and wins the UEFA cup.

Would you consider the latter to be the better team??

See its the same thing as the Carling Cup. Some teams don't take the competition seriously. We were eliminated by City this season in the competition, we played away to a full strength Man City side, yet we still fielded the second team.

What i'm trying to say is, Tottenham winning this competition has no bearing whatsoever over who the better team is, Tottenham or Arsenal.

I've never made such a comparison Fred, all Im saying is that unless Arsenal takes these cups seriously, you won't win them and subsequently you might continue this trophy drought for a long long time.

Trophies like the Carling Cup may not look that appealing to you nor for Wenger. But look at Ferguson for example he's in the final for the 2nd consecutive year and that's what makes a great team, fighting for every game. While Wenger plays the league games and loses/draws many of those while blaming injuries and refs for those. Then just when hopes are high on a CL achievement, he fucks up with an English team and get knocked from the competition and end up trophy-less.

So we would be better off if we won the Carling Cup? Personally I along with a most Arsenal fans i'd imagine would not be satisfied by winning a small time tournament like the CC. IMO until we win one of the FA Cup, CL or EPL, our drought continues.

If anything, the CC would be an unnecessary distraction.

Well you're not playing your 1st team at the FA Cup. Hell, even at that Olympiacos CL game your 2nd team was fielded.
And the amazing thing is that you always fuck up when the 2nd team plays :D

Honoustly Fred, I don't see you winning any major trophy soon unless Wenger changes his attitude and actually focuses on one team rather than two.

We played our second team against Olympiakos because we already qualified for the second round at the time.

The Stoke game was followed by games against Villa, United, Chelsea and Liverpool, all in the span of 15 days. We lost to Chelsea and United and we drew with Villa, so in hindsight it wasn't a smart decision by Wenger to field the second team against Stoke.

What frustrates me the most, is that we are a couple of signings away from being a title challenger, yet Wenger always chooses to rely on mediocre players like Denilson, Walcott and Bentdner.

Fans panic as Bridge retirement puts Neville one place closer to recall

England supporters were last night panicking after Wayne Bridge’s international retirement moved Phil Neville up one place in the pecking order for a left-back berth at the World Cup.

Bridge withdrew from England consideration stating his presence in the squad would make it difficult for John Terry to tell the younger players about all the birds he’s had it off with.

However, the move has elevated Phil Neville to 11th in line for the England left-back birth, ensuring the team is now one significant 'accident’ from fielding Neville during this summer’s World Cup finals.

Long time England supporter Jeff Beale told of his dismay, “This is terrible, terrible news.”

“I feel for Wayne Bridge, I really do - but this is Phil Neville we’re talking about. Philip Fucking Neville.”

“I’d rather watch Bridge and Terry spend 90 minutes shouting snide remarks about each other’s penises than have Phil Neville in the team.”

Career

The elevation of Neville to England consideration is one of the previously unseen side effects of a wayward John Terry penis.

Another fan told us, “I’m sure that lining up alongside Phil Neville wasn’t on his mind at the time - unless he was trying to slow himself down - but this is where John Terry’s genitals have got us.”

“I mean, has everyone forgotten Euro 2000? I don’t care if there are ten players ahead of Neville in the pecking order, the fact he’s even on the list is cause enough for panic among the supporters.”

“Is Kenny Sansom still playing? He could do a job there, definitely.”

Almunia indeed. He has been absolutely terrible this season, the same goes for Clichy who has virtually become a walking disaster. Don't even get me started on Silvestre.
