AXE FALLS ON CITY BOSS
Mancini replaces Hughes at City

By Soccernet staff

December 19, 2009

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has been sacked and former Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini has been hired after the 4-3 defeat of Sunderland.

City's chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, and owner, Sheikh Mansour, had grown increasingly disillusioned with City's poor form, having watched Hughes' side win just twice in eleven league games.

In giving reason for the decision on City's website, Al Mubarak said: "Prior to the current season beginning, with significant investment in players and infrastructure in place, the consensus between the board and coaching staff was that appropriate agreed targets should be set for the 2009-2010 season.

"The targets were agreed as a result of the player acquisition strategy of the club being radically accelerated in the summer as a result of very favourable conditions for any buying club. It was also based on the fact that the infrastructure of the club had been overhauled completely at great cost in order to create the best possible environment for the team.

"A return of two wins in 11 Premier League games is clearly not in line with the targets that were agreed and set. Sheikh Mansour and the board felt that there was no evidence that the situation would fundamentally change. This is a particularly difficult announcement given the personal investment over the past 15 months on all sides and we would like to put on record our respect for and thanks to Mark Hughes and we wish him the best in his future career."

The statement also confirmed the appointment, with immediate effect on a permanent contract, of Roberto Mancini, while Brian Kidd joins the team as assistant manager.

"Roberto is a hugely experienced manager with a proven track record of winning trophies and championships,'' it read. ''His experience and track record speak for themselves. What is absolutely clear is that Roberto believes in Manchester City's potential to achieve at the highest level and importantly in his own ability to make this happen. My hope is that our incredible fans will join us in welcoming Roberto to the football club."

Hughes oversaw City's 4-3 victory over Sunderland on Saturday but he is thought to have known about his sacking before the game, and appeared emotional at the end of the match, apparently waving goodbye to the home supporters.

City are up to sixth in the table but the 3-0 midweek drubbing by Spurs was the final straw for the owners, who are keen on an overhaul in order to keep the club's Champions League qualification hopes alive.

The agent of Guus Hiddink revealed on Friday that City had been in contact with the Dutchman, while Jürgen Klinsmann and Jose Mourinho had also been linked with the job.

Mark Bowen, Eddie Niedzwiecki, Kevin Hitchcock and Glyn Hodges have also left the club and further appointments will be announced in due course.
City's owners are the worst kind of people to be running a football club. For all their talk and assurances that they wouldn't act like Abromovich, what do they do? Sack Hughes and appoint Mancini...they go one step more than Abromovich: they actually appointed a far worse coach than they had!

They gave Hughes ample time. With the amount of money they have invested, they expect returns. The coach failed to meet the targets and he had to leave. Don't make it sound like City is the devil here. And you underrate Mancini. He's not a great coach, but he's definitely better than Hughes.

i think he will do well, yea i said it.
:agree:

Hughes has been there for two seasons now and he didn't even form a decent spine for this team. The sacking could be seen a bit harsh but justified imo.

In what frigging way is Mancini worse? Hughes career has been nothing but making a defensive hardworking butchering team with small time Blackburn, and then this mess with City, rightfully sacked, they gave time to say the least, and what he repayed them with is 2-3 goals conceaded every game, not winning 2 games in a 2 for over 3 months, and 1 single 1 in 10 games, thats exactly not repaying them for their big investments and fitting for their quality squad.

Mancini has had clearly the better career and shown he is the better coach. Not just for Inter, but was rather good with Lazio and Fiorentina.

I dont like Mancini exactly, and understand others who dont or mock him, but his tenure with Inter is underestimated, just as the footie he played with Lazio and Viola, the results and such, seems to have been easily forgotten. He isnt a bad coach, on the contrary. Not a top coach, not a tactical mastermind that will get you lots of titles, but prolly do pretty well in his own still.

Hughes was a big fucking joke this season, a huge one. If anything, the mistake was firing Mancini's mentor Eriksson, when he was doing well with City, with half of the quality of their current squad.

Shouldn't we be worried about Mancini? bearing in mind he has a fuck load of money behind him now and knows italian football inside out. Hes just picked up team with a massive defensive deficit so he might come knocking for Chiellini or a replacement for the fuck up that Barry has turned out to be...ie Marchisio.....

We are not a selling club. Unless they are ready to offer insane amount of money like Real did for Zidane. So no, we don't need to be worried.

They pay 23 mil for Lescott, which makes him the third most expensive defender ever, and hes not very good.

Naah really doubt it. Both Chiellini and Marchisio are playing for the best club in their country, They can't ask for more. Same with english and spanish players playing for top clubs in their countries.

But we are not Everton. We are not a mid table side and we are not debt ridden either. For all our troubles on the pitch, we are financially solid, hence nullifying our need to sell. So we wouldn't sell anyone who is seen as a long term investment (Chiellini and Marchisio) unless we get paid insane amount of money (Zidanesque)

Yup, Diamanti scored a penalty.

Chelsea should've equalized from a quickly taken free-kick, but Drogba shot wide instead of just crossing it to one of the 2 Chelsea players waiting to tap it in.

Second half just started.
