But that was before Alonso's move.
Rafa might have got it wrong.
Barry signed, then Alonso moved,

As for Arsenal, I think Arsene thought he's over the age limit :)
At that point, when Barry was sold, in June or whenever. Madrid hadn't started their advertising campaign and Alonso was part of the team. Liverpool was working on Johnson, things were being patched and all was "well". Then Madrid put immense pressure on Xabi, who waited a month and a half to make a decision. We got 35million but no replacement.

Stupid money, but he could be worth it in the long run. It's a bit of a gamble given how much they could have used that money elsewhere though.
We could really use another striker. And considering Arbeloa was asking to leave early on, I couldn't imagine us playing with Darby/Carragher at the right. I'm actually pleased with Johnson so far.

I'd say he's a decent player and he's probably doing a fine job but it was over-payed. Crouch or not Crouch you could have kept that money (8mln or whatever) and sign someone else. But you have "just" added 11 more mln on the top of that.

Well he was/is supposed to take that place, no? He's coming back soon.
First of all, we've purchased him yes. But that hardly makes him a replacement, I'll reserve my judgment until he steps on the pitch.

Secondly, he's coming back sometime between now and December, so soon is relative. He hasn't played for the reserves yet, though he is training "lightly".

Third, I thought it was retarded to purchase an injured player when you want to compete for the EPL title. You really have to get off to a good start in this league and we haven't basically because we bought an injured player.

Aquilani will get injured after a couple matches, so there's point in even discussing that overrated player.
When he left he said he was threatened bad at Rome with their medical staff. He had a surgery in the Netherlands at some famous doctor and there's a hope he won't be injury prone again. It was a risky buy though, I agree. But yet again he used to play 40-50 matches in Serie B before he came back to Roma without any big injury problems. Maybe they knew more than us when they bought him.

You realize we didn't have Crouch this summer right? We sold him the previous summer for 10 million pounds to be paid over the course of the 08-09 season, due to financial issues Portsmouth only paid 2 million.

Anyway, Johnson is on of the better rb's in the Prem. Who else is better and would have been available for less than 30 million this mercato?

My only point is that the EPL is a"quick start" league. Buying an injured player to replace your most important player doesn't exactly help that.

I'm sure Rafinha would be available for much less. For that amount of money Sagna would be available too. There were many choices, it's not 5mln euros worth players we're talking about.

They're good players, and while I'd sooner eat glass than suggest Johnson is a better player than them, he's English and proven in the EPL. Those things suggest he could be a long term buy, and that's what justifies overpaying for him.

Johnson for £18m...what an awful buy that was.

I said the same thing when they first bought him. And i still think 18M is a lot of money. But to be completely honest he has been one of Liverpool's top performers this season, and has shown that he could turn out to be a quality signing. Sometimes you overpay for players, thats how the market is like nowadays.

Nope, Arsenal have no reason to sell Sagna. It isn't that easy. Just because you're ready to flash the money, doesn't mean you can buy whomever you want.
